Student-Athlete of the Week

Week of February 25 – March 3

Junior Japie De Klerk (Men’s Tennis) has a 3.04 GPA while majoring in exercise and sports science. De Klerk, a native of Ashton, South Africa, propelled the Hurricane to a come-from-behind victory at Michigan last week. De Klerk teamed up with Carlos Bautista to win the doubles point for TU, and defeated No. 67 Vlad Stefan of Michigan in singles play as the Golden Hurricane defeated the No. 21 Wolverines, 5-2. De Klerk is currently ranked 52nd in the nation in singles.

MEN’S BASKETBALL (16-13, 7-7 C-USA)

Defeated Tulane 78-66 (After trailing 43-23 at half, the Tulsa men's basketball team stormed back, outscoring Tulane 55-23 in the second stanza to defeat the Green Wave 78-66 in front of 5,089 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Tulsa was down by as many as 22 points at the 18:22 mark of the second half. Leading the Tulsa charge was senior Scottie Haralson, who tallied 16 points, 13 of them coming in the second half. Haralson was a perfect 5-of-5 shooting from the charity stripe. Junior Pat Swilling Jr. recorded 14 points. Freshman James Woodard collected 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds, while freshman Rashad Ray added 10. Freshman Shaquille Harrison had a well-rounded night as the guard tied a career high with eight assists, added seven points and seven rebounds. Freshman Brandon Swannegan added nine points and four rebounds in 13 minutes of play.) 

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (12-16, 7-8 C-USA)

Defeated Memphis (Four Tulsa players scored in double figures to give the Hurricane a 79-68 win over Memphis on Thursday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. This was TU's first win over the Tigers since the 2007-08 season. Taleya Mayberry had a team-leading 17 points, six assists and three steals in 37 minutes of play. Kelsee Grovey scored 16 points, Tiffani Couisnard added 14 points and a team-best nine rebounds, and also had three steals, and Mariah Turner tallied 11 points.) 

Lost to UAB 59-45  (TU fell 59-45 to UAB on Sunday afternoon at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala. on Sunday. Ashley Clark and Kelsee Grovey each scored nine points, while Taleya Mayberry added eight and Mariah Turner tallied six to lead the Hurricane attack. Tiffani Couisnard pulled down seven rebounds, had three assists and two blocks, Clark added six boards, and Mayberry and Clark each had two steals.) 

MEN’S GOLF

Placed Eighth at John Hayt Collegiate (The Tulsa Golden Hurricane men finished in eighth place with a 36-hole score of 589 at the par-72 Sawgrass Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla., which was shortened due to heavy rains. Junior Logan McCracken placed 12th overall with an even-par score of 144. Tulsa trailed fourth-place by just two strokes as there was a four-team logjam for the fourth position with identical scores of 587 for the tournament.)

WOMEN’S GOLF

Finished 15th at Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate (The Tulsa women's golf team finished in 15th place at the rain-shortened Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate. The Hurricane finished the 36-hole tournament with a 613 total.  Tulsa's Shu-Yin Liu finished in 27th place after carding a two-round total of 149, while fellow senior Kristina Merkle finished with a score of 152 and in 45th place.)

No. 19/21 SOFTBALL (15-5)

Defeated UT Arlington 5-1 (Five different players drove in runs for the Golden Hurricane in its 5-1 win against UT Arlington to open up the UT Arlington Classic on Friday. Junior third baseman Jill Barrett, was 3-for-4 with a home run, while fellow junior outfielder Haley Henshaw had two of Tulsa's 10 hits and scored twice. Junior Aimee Creger struck out nine and allowed four hits and walked one in a complete-game win.)

Defeated Lamar 7-4 (Freshman Caitlin Sill (1-2) picked up her first collegiate victory in the circle with a five-inning start against Lamar as the Hurricane defeated the Cardinals, 7-4.  Redshirt freshman left fielder Jodi Edmison was 2-for-3 with three RBI, and senior center fielder Caitlin Everett went 3-for-4 with a run. TU scored a run in the third inning, and six runs over the final three frames.)

Fell to Creighton 4-3 (Eight Innings) (TU dropped a 4-3 decision to Creighton in a game that went to international tie breaker rules. Caitlin Everett and Jill Barrett each tallied two hits, while Lacey Middlebrooks hit her third home run of the season for TU.) 

Won against UT Arlington 5-1 (TU defeated UTA 5-1 to advance to the championship game of the UTA Classic on Saturday. Aimee Creger went the distance for TU to pick up the victory as the junior scattered four hits over seven innings and tallied nine strikeouts. Eight different TU batters picked up hits in the triumph.)

Beat Lamar 2-1 (TU defeated Lamar 2-1 on Sunday to win the UTA Classic in Arlington. Left fielder Jodi Edmiston singled and stole second with two out in the bottom of the seventh, and scored the winning run on a throwing error to give the Golden Hurricane the walkoff victory. Junior Aimee Creger (9-1) entered the game in relief in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded and two out, struck out the only batter she faced, and earned the win for TU.)

No. 17 MEN’S TENNIS (6-5)

Defeated No. 21 Michigan 5-2 (After dropping the first set in five of its six singles tilts, the No. 19-ranked Tulsa men's tennis squad fought back to defeat No. 21 Michigan, 5-2. TU won the doubles point, and Japie De Klerk, Carlos Bautista, Alejandro Espejo and Grant Ive all picked up wins for TU during singles play. The win marked TU’s third win of the season against a Big 10 foe.)

No. 33 WOMEN’S TENNIS (9-4)

Defeated No. 27 Oklahoma State 6-1 (The Tulsa women's tennis squad, ranked No. 28 in the country, defeated No. 27 Oklahoma State, 6-1, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Friday night. After winning the doubles point, TU jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Samantha Vickers, ranked No. 59 in singles, defeated No. 58 Malika Rose, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Maria Sant’Anna, Michelle Farley, Renata Kuricova and Saana Saarteinen also picked up singles wins for TU.)

Swept South Alabama 7-0 (The Hurricane wrapped up the weekend with a 7-0 triumph over South Alabama on Sunday at the Case Tennis Center. Samantha Vickers picked up her 10th singles win of the spring campaign with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Michaela Meszarosova at No. 1 singles. Saana Saarteinen picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, and Carol Benito clinched the match for TU with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. Maria Sant’ Anna, Renata Kuricova and Michelle Farley also earned wins for TU in singles action.)
