Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham announced today the appointment of April Thompson as Academic Coordinator and Learning Specialist for the Golden Hurricane.

A former prep soccer athlete at nearby Jenks (Okla.) High School, Thompson has been involved with education and academic advising and counseling since her graduation from Florida State University in 2001. Her main responsibility at Tulsa will be with the sport of football.

Thompson comes to Tulsa after spending one year at the University of Georgia as a Learning Specialist, where she created an academic mentoring program that incorporated 150 to 200 student-athletes each semester.

Before that, Thompson served as the assistant to the athletics director, assistant to admissions, English teacher and as the JV Boy's soccer coach at Athens (Ga.) Academy for two years. Previously, she spent one year as an English teacher and assistant girl's soccer coach at Leon High School in Florida.

Thompson spent one year prior to that as an athletic academic counselor and tutorial coordinator at Florida State, where she worked mostly with the soccer and swimming & diving programs. Previously, she was graduate assistant at FSU, serving as an assistant athletic academic counselor and educational assistant.

"April has gained immense experience and knowledge during her time in the student-athlete academic services offices at Florida State and Georgia," said Cunningham. "We're excited to have April join our program and know that she will be a tremendous academic resource for our student-athletes and coaches."

Thompson earned her bachelor's degree in English in 2001 and a master's degree in sports administration in 2003, both from Florida State.
