Tulsa, Oklahoma - University of Tulsa Vice President & Director of Athletics Derrick Gragg announced today the appointment of Katie Thompson as Assistant Athletic Director for the Golden Hurricane athletic program. Thompson, who has spent the past three years as the Director of Marketing at the University of Maryland, will oversee Tulsa's marketing efforts.

This new position was one that Gragg believed was a necessity when he became the school's director of athletics in April, and had an agreement that the hiring of a director of marketing would be one of the first priorities in his tenure.

In her three years at Maryland, Thompson first served as an assistant director in the marketing and promotions department and this past year was the director of marketing. Before that, Thompson worked as a marketing assistant at Eastern Michigan University during Gragg's time as director of athletics at the Michigan school.

"Katie is an energetic and enthusiastic individual who will be a valuable asset to our athletic department and the entire community. She has gained great knowledge and experience in her positions at Eastern Michigan and Maryland, and will bring great ideas and a tremendous work ethic to The University of Tulsa," said Gragg.

At Maryland, Thompson assisted with marketing for football where her responsibilities included the planning and implementation of Capital One Terp Town, a fan activation zone. In addition, she was responsible for all marketing activities with the nationally prominent sports of men's soccer, women's basketball and men's lacrosse.

Thompson developed and executed marketing plans for those sports, including the implementation of ticket sales strategies, media buys, in-game sponsor fulfillment, budget management, game day promotions and coordination of all videoboard elements. She also managed three full-time marketing assistants and the sports marketing internship program.

At Eastern Michigan, Thompson assisted with creating and implementing significant marketing strategies for football, men's and women's basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball, including the planning and execution of gameday promotions.

Thompson earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees from Eastern Michigan. She received a bachelor's degree in public relations in 2007 and a master's degree in sport management in 2010.
