Week of September 4-10

Redshirt Freshman Derrick Luetjen (Football) has maintained a 3.763 grade-point average in exercise and sports science. The Hennessey, Okla., native tallied two sacks as the Tulsa football squad won its first game of the season defeating Tulane 45-10. In the contest, Luetjen had three total tackles and was a part of a Hurricane defense that held Tulane to only 177 yards of offense and only seven rushing yards. Last year Luetjen was a Conference USA Academic Medal Winner for holding a grade-point average greater than 3.75.

FOOTBALL (1-1, 0-0 C-USA)

Defeated Tulane 45-10 (Cody Green passed for 274 yards and two touchdowns, and Alex Singleton rushed for 102 yards and three touchdowns as Tulsa defeated Tulane, 45-10, Saturday afternoon in front of a crowd of 17,880 fans at H.A. Chapman Stadium. Green was 13-for-17 passing for 252 yards in the first half alone for the Golden Hurricane (1-1), which held a 368 to 82 total yardage advantage at the break. Tulsa outgained Tulane 651 yards to 177 yards in the game. Tulane scored a field goal on its first drive of the game. After punting on its first possession, Tulsa converted five consecutive drives into touchdowns in the first half, building its lead to 35-3 by halftime. The Hurricane defense harassed Tulane all day, totaling six sacks and 12 tackles for loss. Linebacker DeAundre Brown led Tulsa with eight tackles and three tackles for loss, while Derrick Luetjen and Cory Dorris each recorded two sacks apiece for TU.)

MEN'S SOCCER (3-2, 0-0 C-USA)

Fell to #8 UCLA 1-0 (Tulsa dropped a 1-0 decision to eighth-ranked UCLA on Friday at Drake Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif. Stephen Roberson led the squad with thee shots, while Akeil Barrett added two attempts. Tulsa maintained a 6-4 lead in shots on goals, but the Bruins had 16 shots compared to the Hurricane's 10.)

Defeated Loyola Marymount 3-0 (Brothers Cristian and Omar Mata combined for three goals to power Tulsa to a 3-0 shutout over Loyal Marymount on Sunday afternoon. Cristian scored goals in the 11th and 63rd minutes, while Omar tallied his goal in the 39th minute. The Golden Hurricane held a 6-2 lead in shots on goal. Mark Pais logged all 90 minutes in goal and recorded the shutout.

  

WOMEN'S SOCCER (5-2, 0-0 C-USA)

Lost to Florida Gulf Coast 1-0 (Tulsa dropped a 1-0 decision to Florida Gulf Coast during its first game of the UMKC Invitational in Kansas City, Mo. Claire Hulcer paced the squad with three shots, while Jordan O'Brien added two attempts. TU had a 9-8 advantage in shots, including a 6-4 lead in shots on goal.) 

Defeated UMKC 3-0 (TU recorded a 3-0 shutout over UMKC on Sunday afternoon in the UMKC Invitational in Kansas City, Mo. Lexis Learmonth gave TU an early lead with a header 5:32 into the contest. Claire Hulcer, who recorded the assist on Learmonth's goal, tallied a goal in the 38th minute to give TU a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Alexa Sidorakis recorded the final goal for Tulsa in the 78th minute, while goalkeeper Katie Bykowski recorded her 21st career shutout.)

 

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL (7-4, 0-0 C-USA)

Defeated Oral Roberts 3-2 (23-25, 25-16, 25-13, 22-25, 15-13) (Tyler Henderson slammed 28 kills, and Jordan Clampitt, Kellie Culbertson, and Diana Silva recorded double-doubles to lead the Tulsa volleyball team to a five-set win at Oral Roberts Tuesday evening. Henderson hit .352 in the match and added four blocks, while Miriele Gobbo tallied six blocks and hit .364 with six kills for the Hurricane.)

Won at Northern Colorado 3-2 (25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 17-25, 21-19) (TU handed Northern Colorado its first loss of the season as the Golden Hurricane won a five set thriller at the Northern Colorado Classic at Butler Hancock Sports Pavilion on Friday night. Outside hitter Tyler Henderson led the squad with 23 kills and added three service aces on the evening. Middle blocker Ashley Hooper set a career high with 15 kills on the night.)

Lost To Creighton 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 25-19) (Tulsa dropped a 3-2 decision to Creighton in the second game of the Northern Colorado Classic. Tyler Henderson had 25 kills and 10 digs, while Kellie Culbertson added 12 kills and 15 digs. Setter Bailey Clampitt set a career-high with 52 assists, and recorded a double-double with 11 digs.) 

Defeated Ball State 3-1 (25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 27-25) (TU ended its 11 game road swing with a four set victory over Ball State to finish second at the Northern Colorado Classic. Tyler Henderson had 19 kills, while middle blocker Carly Boatwright had a career high 14 kills. Bailey Clampitt added 49 assists and 10 digs to secure her second double-double of the season, while Kellie Culbertson recorded her eighth double-double of the year with 11 kills and 16 digs. Tyler Henderson was named the tournament's MVP, while Ashley Hooper earned a spot on the all-tournament team.)
