Student-Athlete of the Week Week of September 18-24 Senior goalkeeper Mark Pais (Men's Soccer) has maintained a 4.0 grade-point average in exercise and sports science. Pais, a senior-transfer from St. Louis, Mo., logged all 90 minutes in goal and recorded three saves for a shutout to propel the Golden Hurricane to a 4-0 victory over South Carolina in its Conference USA opener. On the season, Pais has picked up 25 saves and three shutouts, which ranks third in the conference. For his efforts against South Carolina, he was named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week.
Last Week's Results FOOTBALL (3-1, 1-0 C-USA) Defeated Fresno State 27-26 (Tulsa overcame a 20-7 deficit after the first quarter to defeat Fresno State, 27-26 Saturday evening. Tailback Trey Watts hit wide receiver Thomas Roberson for a 26-yard touchdown with 2:52 left in the third quarter that, with the point-after, gave the Golden Hurricane its first lead of the game. Cody Green completed 13-of-37 passes for 202 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. Jordan James was the recipient of four of those completions for a team-leading 84 yards, including a long of 42 yards. Roberson caught three passes for 65 yards and the touchdown. Alex Singleton led TU rushing with 56 yards, while Ja'Terian Douglas finished with 52 rushing yards, including a 32-yard touchdown run. Tulsa's defense was led by DeAundre Brown's 12 tackles, Shawn Jackson's 11 tackles and Dexter McCoil's 10 stops. Defensive tackles Daeshon Bufford and Derrick Jackson each recorded a sack, and Bufford forced a fumble.) MEN'S GOLF Finished Third at Golfweek Challenge (Senior Chris Worrell claimed second-place while leading Tulsa to a third-place performance at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Burlington, Iowa. Worrell ended the challenge with a seven-under par score of 209 for his career-best, second-place performance. For his efforts, Worrell was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week. The Hurricane had a score of 867 to finish ten strokes behind tournament winner Missouri. Newcomer Logan McCracken finished in seventh place.)
WOMEN'S GOLF Finished Ninth at Dale McNamara Invitational (The Tulsa women golfers finished ninth in the 15-team field at the season-opening Dale McNamara Invitational. Golden Hurricane freshman Antonia Von Wnuck was Tulsa's top finisher, as she tied for 10th place with total of 218 after a final-round 73. Senior Shu-Yin Liu carded a three-under par 69 in the final round to score 220 for the tournament and tie for 14th overall.)
MEN'S SOCCER (5-3, 1-0 C-USA) Fell to UC Davis 2-1 (Four Tulsa men's soccer players scored a goal to lead the Golden Hurricane to a 4-0 win over Conference USA foe South Carolina on Friday night. Cristian Mata, Bryce Follensbee, Kyle Cumings and Akeil Barrett all found the back of the net for the Hurricane. Mark Pais logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up three saves to earn his third shutout of the year. The Hurricane had an 18-9 lead in shots, including an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal.)
WOMEN'S SOCCER (5-3-2, 0-1-1 C-USA) Lost to Rice 1-0 (TU dropped a 1-0 decision in its Conference USA opener at Rice on Friday night. Claire Hulcer led the Hurricane offense with two shots. Katie Bykowski had 10 saves in goal for Tulsa, who was out shot 23-6 in the affair.) Tied Houston 0-0 (2OT) (Tulsa battled Houston to a 0-0 double-overtime tie on Sunday afternoon at Robertson Stadium in Houston. Claire Hulcer, Stephanie Aitken, Rachel Garcia and Alexa Sidorakis each had two shots for Tulsa. Hayley Harryman logged all 110 minutes in goal and tallied five saves en route to her first shutout of the season.)
MEN'S TENNIS Competed at the HEB Invitational (In its second tournament of the fall campaign, TU had a strong performance at the HEB Invitational hosted by Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Headlining action for the Golden Hurricane was the play of Japie De Klerk and Alejandro Espejo. The duo defeated the tournament's No. 1 seeded doubles team of John Collins and Hunter Reese of Tennessee, 8-4 in the quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals. Espejo also advanced to the quarterfinals in singles play for the Hurricane.)
WOMEN'S TENNIS Competed at Aces For The Cure Tournament (Tulsa took home four individual titles during the Aces For The Cure Tournament hosted by the University of Missouri at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City. Samantha Vickers won the tournament title in No. 1 singles, while Maria Sant'Anna was crowned the champion at No. 4 singles. In doubles play, Michelle Farley and Saana Sarteinen were named the tournaments No. 2 doubles champions, and Sant'Anna teamed up with Renata Kurikova at No. 3 doubles to finish the weekend 2-0 to win the tournament title.) WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL (10-7, 3-0 C-USA) Defeated SMU 3-1 (25-15, 24-26, 25-23, 25-8) (Jessica Adams collected her 2,000th career dig in Tulsa's 3-1 victory over SMU on Wednesday. Adams tied a career high in digs with 31 to pace the Hurricane defense. That marked the fourth time that Adams totaled more than 30 digs in a match during her career. Tyler Henderson added 18 kills while hitting .400, while Diana Silva notched a double-double with 16 kills and 15 digs. Kellie Culbertson set a season high in digs with 18, while adding seven kills, six assists and three service aces. Tulsa scored 25 of its points on Culbertson serves, including seven in the second set and eight in the third.) Swept Marshall 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-16) (Tulsa swept Marshall on Friday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Leading the Tulsa charge was the duo of Tyler Henderson and Diana Silva. Each had nine kills and four digs during the match, while Henderson hit .400 and Silva hit .296. Jessica Adams collected a team leading 21 digs and chipped in a career-high eight assists. Jordan Clampitt added 13 assists and 12 digs for her third double-double of the season. Bailey Clampitt paced the team with 14 assists and tallied nine digs.) Swept East Carolina 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-16) (Tulsa swept East Carolina to win its ninth straight match against the Pirates on Sunday. TU forced ECU into 19 attack errors, nine block errors and four ball handling errors. Tulsa featured a very balanced attack as four players had more than eight kills. Tyler Henderson tallied 10 kills and hit .360, while Diana Silva added 10 kills and seven digs. Paige Panfil set a career high with nine kills and hit .462.)
