Student-Athlete of the Week

Week of October 9 - October 15

Senior runner Andrew Heyes (Cross Country) maintained a 3.563 grade point average in business and is currently pursuing his masters in business administration. Heyes, a native of Sheffield, Yorkshire, U.K., led the Tulsa men’s cross country team to a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Pre-National Meet on Saturday. Heyes completed in the 8,000-meter course in 23:42.4 to set a personal-best time and to finish in 14th-place in the team’s final meet before the Conference USA Championships on October 29 in Hattiesburg, Miss.

CROSS COUNTRY

Competed At NCAA Pre-National Meet (Senior Andrew Heyes ran a personal-best time of 23:42.4 in the 8K to place 15th and lead No. 9 Tulsa men’s cross country squad to a seventh-place finish at the 40-team NCAA Pre-National Meet Saturday morning. The Golden Hurricane totaled 292 points, finishing ahead of three other ranked opponents among the eight in the NCAA Championships preparatory meet. Senior Paulo Pinheiro ran 23:58.5 to finish 40th and sophomore Danny Thater ran a personal-record 24:13.4 to finish 68th. The Hurricane women ran their first 6K race of the season, and finished with four scorers setting personal-best times in the 6K. TU finished 19th as a team with 553 points. Senior Sarah Macpherson was Tulsa's top finisher, coming in 78th with a personal-record 21:25.2 in the 265-runner race. Senior Erin Huddleston ran a personal-best 21:36.6 to place 102nd.)

FOOTBALL (6-1, 4-0 C-USA)

Defeated UTEP 33-11 (Alex Singleton ran for two touchdowns to lead Tulsa past UTEP, 33-11, Thursday evening in front of a crowd of 18,961 fans at H.A. Chapman Stadium. Singleton now has 32 rushing touchdowns in his career, matching the totals of Michael Gunter (1980-83) and Tarrion Adams (2005-08). He rushed 21 times for 96 yards, while junior tailback Ja'Terian Douglas led TU with 128 yards, including an 81-yard touchdown sprint. The Golden Hurricane totaled 281 rushing yards in the game, and outgained the Miners, 479-407 in total yards. DeAundre Brown, who earned Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week accolades, tallied 14 tackles to lead the Hurricane defense, which forced three turnovers and totaled 10 tackles for loss and six sacks. TU held UTEP to just 31 yards rushing in 33 attempts. Brown led the team with three sacks on the evening, while Jared St. John tallied two sacks.) 

MEN’S GOLF

Placed Sixth At Rod Myers Invitational (Logan McCracken finished in fifth place at the Rod Myers Invitational on Sunday afternoon as the Golden Hurricane team placed sixth overall in the 11-team field. Colton Staggs placed 20th overall with a score of 219 after a one-over par 73 in the final round, while senior Chris Worrell's 72 final round score put him in 25th place overall with a four-over par total of 220. The Golden Hurricane finished the 54-hole tournament with a score 875.)

MEN’S SOCCER (8-4-1, 2-1-1 C-USA)

Tied Memphis 2-2 (The Tulsa men's soccer team tied Memphis, 2-2, in double overtime on Saturday night at the Mike Rose Stadium in Memphis, Tenn. Cristian Mata, the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, scored his 10th goal of the season at the 16:38 mark off a rebound attempt by Tony Rocha, while Bryce Follensbee scored his  8th goal of the year in the 57th minute. Memphis had a 17-14 lead in shots, while Tulsa had a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal, and the Tigers had a 9-1 lead in corner kicks.) 

WOMEN’S SOCCER (8-5-3, 3-3-1 C-USA)

Defeated Marshall 2-0 (Raven Tatum scored two goals to give the Tulsa women's soccer team a 2-0 win over Marshall on Friday night in Huntington, W.Va. Tatum scored her second career goal in as many games as she headed in a cross from Claire Hulcer at the 20:16 mark, and then picked up her third goal in the 41st minute off a combination from Brady Hinch and Katy Riojas to give TU a 2-0 lead heading into the break. The Thundering Herd had a 9-7 lead in shots, while both teams had three shots on goal, and TU had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.)

Tied East Carolina 0-0 (The Tulsa women's soccer team battled East Carolina to a 0-0 double-overtime tie on Sunday afternoon at the ECU Soccer Stadium in Greenville, N.C. Claire Nicholson came off the bench and tallied a team-best five shots, while Bradi Hinch had four attempts, and Raven Tatum and Claire Hulcer each had three shots. Katie Bykowski logged all 110 minutes between the posts, recorded six saves and earned her fourth shutout on the year.)

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL (15-8, 8-1 C-USA)

Defeated UTEP 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 22-25, 15-5) Senior Tyler Henderson, the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, pounded 31 kills, and senior Jessica Adams had 30 digs as The University of Tulsa volleyball team defeated the UTEP Miners in five sets. Henderson hit .434 in the match to lead the Golden Hurricane. TU tallied 77 kills in the match and hit .227 overall, and outhit the Miners, which finished with 47 kills and hit .168 as a team. Senior Jordan Clampitt recorded a double-double with 41 assists and 12 digs. Senior Diana Silva had 11 kills alongside her 12 digs, and sophomore Bailey Clampitt tallied 26 assists and 11 digs, earning them both double-doubles as well.)

Swept Tulane 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-22) (Senior Tyler Henderson slammed 18 kills and freshman Ashley Hooper added 13 kills to power The University of Tulsa volleyball team to a sweep of Tulane on Sunday. The Golden Hurricane held the Green Wave to 25 kills and a .026 hitting percentage for the match. TU hit .244 and tallied 44 kills, and posted 39 assists and 60 digs to Tulane's 23 assists and 50 digs. Hooper hit .579, with just two errors in 19 attempts, and Henderson hit .424 - her second straight match with a hitting percentage above .400. Senior Jordan Clampitt earned her second consecutive double-double, and her eighth of the season, with 22 assists and 13 digs. Senior Diana Silva led TU with 16 digs and Senior Jessica Adams added 14 digs for the Hurricane.)
