Student-Athlete of the Week Week of October 16 - October 22 Junior Samantha Vickers (Women's Tennis) maintains a 3.188 grade point average while studying biology. Vickers, a native of Linconshire, U.K., teamed up with sophomore Isaura Enrique to win the doubles title at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships this past week at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The Tulsa tandem became the first Golden Hurricane pair to win the title since Jana Sedivecc and Jennifer DeSpain did it back in 2000 and earned a spot in the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship November 8-11 in Flushing, N.Y. Vickers, ranked No. 44 in the nation, also finished runner-up in singles play winning five matches to get to the finals Last Week's Results FOOTBALL (7-1, 5-0 C-USA) Defeated UTEP 33-11 (Alex Singleton scored the second of his two touchdowns with 1:33 left in the game to lead Tulsa to a 28-24 comeback win over Rice on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Hurricane took over on its own 20 after Rice missed a field goal with 2:55 remaining in the contest. On the first play from scrimmage, Ja'Terian Douglas weaved and raced 75 yards to give TU first-and-goal on the Rice 5. Two plays later, Singleton dove in from the 1 to give the Hurricane its first lead of the game. Douglas finished with 169 yards and a touchdown on 17 rushes. Singleton ran 18 times for 63 yards, and with his two scores, he is now in sole possession of the Tulsa career rushing touchdowns record with 34 career rushing touchdowns. Dexter McCoil and DeAundre Brown led the Hurricane defense with 13 tackles apiece, while McCoil's interception in the third quarter led to a Tulsa score that tied the game at 21.) WOMEN'S GOLF Competed at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic (The Tulsa women's golf team finished in 12th place at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic. Senior Kristina Merkle finished in an 18th-place tie with a nine-over par score of 225, while fellow senior Shu-Yin Liu turned in a 226 score to finish in 24th place overall. Freshman Antonia Von Wnuck completed the three-day tournament with a score of 230 for 47th place.) MEN'S SOCCER (10-4-1, 4-1-1 C-USA) Took Down UAB 2-1 (Kyle Cumings and Cristian Mata each scored a goal for Tulsa's 30th-ranked men's soccer team to earn a 2-1 win over UAB on Tuesday night at West Campus Field in Birmingham, Ala. Cumings scored in the second minute of the game to give TU an early lead, and Mata pushed the lead to two goals in the 30th minute. UAB had a 17-10 lead in shots and a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.) Defeated UCF 3-1 (Tulsa picked up its 10th win of the season as the Golden Hurricane defeated UCF 3-1 on Sunday. Bradley Bourgeois scored his first goal of the season to tie the score at one apiece in the 41st minute of the game. Omar Mata scored his fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 64th minute and Bryce Follensbee headed in a goal to give TU a 3-1 lead. Mark Pais, the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, logged all 90 minutes in goal for Tulsa.) WOMEN'S SOCCER (10-5-3, 5-3-1 C-USA) Defeated Memphis 3-0 (Rebecca Handley, Jordan O'Brien and Camille Pelley each scored a goal for Tulsa to give the Golden Hurricane a 3-0 win over Memphis on Friday night. The Golden Hurricane and Tigers entered halftime in a 0-0 battle, but Tulsa scored two goals during the first seven minutes of the second half to put the game away. Haley Harryman had six saves for TU, as Memphis had a 13-11 lead in shots, including an 8-5 lead in shots on goal, and the Tigers had a 3-1 lead in corner kicks. Shut out UAB 2-0 (Tulsa defeated UAB 2-0 on Sunday afternoon as Rebecca Handley and Alexa Sidorakis found the back of the net to propel the Golden Hurricane to victory. Handley tallied her sixth goal of the season at the 15:19 mark in the first half, while Sidorakis gave TU a two-goal cushion in the 68th minute. Katie Bykowski tallied seven saves in her sixth shutout of the year. ) MEN'S TENNIS Competed at ITA Central Region Championship (Clifford Marsland, in his first action of the fall campaign, advanced to the quarterfinals at the ITA Central Region Championship. Marsland won three matches on the weekend, while Grant Ive and Tristan Jackson advanced to the Round of 16 in doubles competition.) WOMEN'S TENNIS Competed at ITA Central Region Championship (Sam Vickers and Isaura Enrique won the doubles title at the ITA Central Region Championship hosted at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The duo earned a spot in the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship November 8-11 in Flushing, N.Y. WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL (16-8, 9-1 C-USA) Swept SMU 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-17) (Led by a stellar balanced attack with four players tallying nine or more kills, the Tulsa volleyball team swept SMU on Friday night in Dallas. The Golden Hurricane snapped the Mustangs four game-winning streak. Senior outside hitter Tyler Henderson led the balanced attack with 10 kills on 15 swings and earned an attack percentage of .600. Freshman outside hitter Paige Panfil tied a career high with nine kills and set a career high with four blocks in the contest. Sophomore middle blocker Carly Boatwright hit .375 with nine kills and three blocks, while freshman middle blocker Ashley Hooper tallied nine kills, held an attack percentage of .318 and recorded four blocks.)
