Melissa Dawson joined The University of Tulsa in June 2008 as the Associate Athletics Director for Student Services. Dawson came to Tulsa with 19 years of experience in education, including nine years on the collegiate level at DePaul, Kentucky, South Carolina and Iowa.
Dawson has spent the past three years as an athletic academic coordinator at the University of Iowa, where she served as the academic coordinator for five sports, including women's basketball, rowing, softball, men's swimming and men's gymnastics. She also served as the assistant director of retention and assistant director of the special assistance fund.
Previously, Dawson taught eighth grade language arts and reading at Richland School District 2 in Columbia, South Carolina, four years. Before that, she served as an academic counselor for two years at the University of South Carolina for men's basketball, football, women's basketball, softball, swimming and women's soccer.
Prior to that, Dawson spent three years at the University of Kentucky as an academic counselor for the sports of football and men's basketball.
"We're excited to have Melissa join our athletic program. She brings an abundance of collegiate experience to The University of Tulsa and will be a tremendous asset for our student-athletes and coaches," said Cunningham.
Dawson's first position on the collegiate level was as an athletic academic advising intern at DePaul University, where she worked with the men's basketball team in 1995.
Dawson earned her bachelor's degree in education from Drake University in 1989, and received her master's of education degree in counseling and higher education in 1996 from DePaul.
