Served as head football coach for five years. Took Tulsa to its first bowl game, a Sun Bowl win in 1941, beginning a five-year bowl game run for the Golden Hurricane, including two trips to the Sugar Bowl, one Orange Bowl and one Oil Bowl appearance. During his tenure, Tulsa football posted a 40-9-1 record, won three league titles and outscored the opposition 1,552 to 375 points. His teams led the nation in passing in 1942 and '44. Three of his teams were ranked nationally at seasons end, including a school-best ranking of 4th in 1942.
