TULSA, Okla. -
Tyler Henderson finished with 12 kills and Jessica Adams had 16 digs as the Tulsa volleyball team fell to No. 20 Dayton, 3-0 (19-25, 17-25, 18-24), in the Golden Hurricane Classic Friday evening at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
The Golden Hurricane (7-6) concludes the tournament against No. 10 Minnesota at 2 p.m. Saturday.
"I really feel like the last two nights our floor defense has been pretty good," Tulsa Head Coach Steven McRoberts said. "Dayton definitely has a great defense and back row. We took some good swings tonight that just didn't go down. They kept the rallies going and kept the ball on us a lot like Kansas State did last night. We just didn't do a good job from a hitting percentage standpoint of putting it away. I do feel overall that our floor defense was good.
Setters Jordan and Bailey Clampitt tallied 15 and 12 assists, respectively. Outside hitter Kellie Culbertson recorded seven kills, and middle blocker Ashley Hooper had six kills and a pair of blocks. TU hit .089 as a team, and totaled 42 digs and 4.0 blocks. Dayton (8-3) hit .327, with 47 digs and 8.0 blocks. Each team had three service aces.
The first set was tied at 18 apiece, but Dayton scored seven of the final eight points to claim at 25-19 win. The Flyers held a 23-12 advantage late in the second frame, before the Hurricane used a 5-1 run to close the gap to 24-17, but UD took the set 25-17. Dayton broke a 1-1 tie in the third set, and held a steady lead between four and seven points throughout the set as it took the final frame, 25-18.
"We also got a lot of players playing time, which has also been a little bit of the storyline for us this year. We do have a lot of players going into conference that will have seen time on the floor. We're just going to have to continue to work at being better," said McRoberts. "We're going to stay positive. We're playing a very, very tough schedule, and I think everybody will see that when a lot of these teams, if not most of these teams that we've already played, are going to be in the NCAA Tournament. We want to keep getting better and join them."
Tulsa's match against Minnesota will be preceded by the tilt between Dayton and Kansas State at 11 a.m.
