Since the opening of the Donald W. Reynolds Center in 1998, Tulsa’s athletic facilities have undergone a major facelift. New facilities include the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, the Collins Family Softball Complex, the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium, the J. Bird Sr. Shell Nest, the Jack Zink Indoor Rowing Center, the Case Athletic Complex and major renovation to H.A. Chapman Stadium.
TU is 75th among national doctoral universities in U. S. News & World Report's 2012 edition of America's Best Colleges. TU's 2011 freshman class had a mean cumulative grade point average of 3.8, and 74 percent graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school classes. Their average ACT was 28.
The Golden Hurricane Club, as the primary fundraising arm of TU Athletics, works to provide every TU student-athlete with the opportunity to realize a world-class athletic and academic experience.
2011-12: (Indoor) Ran the mile at four meets, improving his time at each event . . . finished ninth at the C-USA Championship in the mile with a season-best time of 4:18.71 . . . finished 16th at the league meet in the 3,000m run with a time of 8:36.18 . . . placed third in the mile at the J.D. Martin Invitational in 4:23.49 . . . (Outdoor) Finished eighth at the Conference USA Championship in the 1,500m with a season-best mark of 3:54.50 . . . also placed 18th at the league meet in the 5,000m (15:17.76) . . . placed third in the 3,000m run at the John Jacobs Invitational with a time of 8:58.19 . . . finished fourth in the 1,500m at the Tulsa Duels with a mark of 4:02.60.
High School: Lettered all four years in both cross country and track at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School . . . earned the Kansas City Star Scholar-Athlete of the Year award as a senior . . . was part of the cross country team that won Class 6A State Championships senior and freshman years . . . team finished runners-up at state sophomore year and placed third junior year . . . ran a personal best in the 1,600m of 4:22 . . . also posted a personal best of 9:25 in the 3,200m . . . finished second individually at state in cross country senior year and third sophomore year . . . won the state championship during his junior track season in the 3,200m . . . was twice named all-state in cross country.
Personal: Majoring in chemical engineering . . . started running at age 15 . . . son of Tim and Laura Thornburg . . . has two siblings, Rachel and Reid . . . born February 21, 1993.
In eight years as a member of Conference USA, Tulsa athletic teams have won a league-best 48 conference championships.
