Since the opening of the Donald W. Reynolds Center in 1998, Tulsa’s athletic facilities have undergone a major facelift. New facilities include the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, the Collins Family Softball Complex, the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium, the J. Bird Sr. Shell Nest, the Jack Zink Indoor Rowing Center, the Case Athletic Complex and major renovation to H.A. Chapman Stadium.
TU is 75th among national doctoral universities in U. S. News & World Report's 2012 edition of America's Best Colleges. TU's 2011 freshman class had a mean cumulative grade point average of 3.8, and 74 percent graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school classes. Their average ACT was 28.
The Golden Hurricane Club, as the primary fundraising arm of TU Athletics, works to provide every TU student-athlete with the opportunity to realize a world-class athletic and academic experience.
2011-12: (Indoor) Participated in five meets . . . finished 10th at the Conference USA Championship in the 800m prelims with a mark of 1:55.04 . . . placed second in the Distance Medley Relay with a time of 10:01.54 . . . was fourth in the 1,000m (2:32.52) at the J.D. Martin Invitational . . . placed fifth in the mile (4:19.69) at the KSU Invitational . . . season-best mile of 4:17.78 came in a 27th-place effort at the Meyo Invitational . . . (Outdoor) Competed in four events . . . won the 800m run at the Tulsa Duels in 1:56.87 . . . finished second in the 3,000m run with a mark of 8:58.19 . . . season-best time of 3:46.74 in the 1,500m came in a fifth-place effort at the John McDonnell Invitational.
2010-11: (Indoor) Competed in five races . . . was a First Team All-Conference honoree after he was part of the Distance Medley Relay team that won the Conference USA championship in a time of 10:08.74 . . . posted a season-best time in the 800m of 1:57.31 at the Tyson Invitational . . . placed eighth in the mile at the conference meet in a time of 4:17.85 . . . (Outdoor) Ran in six meets . . . anchored the 4x1,600m relay team that ran the second-fastest time in school history of 16:57.38 at the Drake Relays . . . was also part of the Distance Medley Relay team that clocked the fourth-fastest time in school history at Drake (9:48.45).
High School: Lettered all four years in both cross country and track and field at Kickapoo High School . . . also lettered his freshman year in basketball . . . was the Class 4A State Champion in cross country his senior year . . . won the state championship in the 1,600-meter run and placed second at state in the 3,200 . . . his personal best time in the 1,600 was 4:07 . . . was named all-Midwest Region Second Team his senior year . . . won the Ozark Conference track championship in the 800, 1,600 and the 3,200 his senior year . . . his 4x800 relay team won the Class 4A State Championship his sophomore year.
Personal: Major is undecided . . . has one younger sister, Emily . . . son of David and Jennifer Thater.
In eight years as a member of Conference USA, Tulsa athletic teams have won a league-best 48 conference championships.
