Since the opening of the Donald W. Reynolds Center in 1998, Tulsa’s athletic facilities have undergone a major facelift. New facilities include the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, the Collins Family Softball Complex, the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium, the J. Bird Sr. Shell Nest, the Jack Zink Indoor Rowing Center, the Case Athletic Complex and major renovation to H.A. Chapman Stadium.
TU is 75th among national doctoral universities in U. S. News & World Report's 2012 edition of America's Best Colleges. TU's 2011 freshman class had a mean cumulative grade point average of 3.8, and 74 percent graduated in the top 10 percent of their high school classes. Their average ACT was 28.
The Golden Hurricane Club, as the primary fundraising arm of TU Athletics, works to provide every TU student-athlete with the opportunity to realize a world-class athletic and academic experience.
2012: (Cross Country) Ran in four meets during the fall . . . finished ninth at the Hurricane Festival . . . ran a personal-best of 25:18 in the 8K at the Notre Dame Invitational . . . claimed 17th at the C-USA Championships.
2011-12: (Indoor) Did not compete . . . (Outdoor) Placed eighth at the C-USA Championship in the 3,000m Steeplechase with the fourth-fastest time in school history of 9:20.70 . . . also competed in the 5K at the league meet, finishing 17th in 15:08.62 . . . ran the 1,500 meters at the Track-It Buster Invitational, placing 12th in 4:08.01 . . . had a season-best finish in the steeplechase of sixth at the John McDonnell Invitational.
2010-11: (Indoor) Participated in five races . . . ran season-bests in the 3,000m (8:44.60) and the 5,000m (15:02.81) at the Conference USA Championship . . . posted a season best of 4:32.14 in the mile at the J.D. Martin Invitational . . . (Outdoor) Raced five times . . . posted the fifth-fastest time in school history in the 3,000m Steeplechase at the Conference USA Championship (9:24.34) to finish fourth . . . won the 3,000m Steeplechase at the Razorback Invitational in a time of 9:33.96 . . . posted a career-best time of 4:01.24 in the 1,500m at the John Jacobs Invitational to place third.
High School: Lettered three years in both track and field and cross country at St. Louis University High School . . . track and field team won the Class 4A State Championship his senior and sophomore years . . . his team placed second at state his junior year . . . finished 30th at the state cross country meet as a senior . . . also finished 12th in the 3,200 meters his senior year . . . ran a personal-best 5K time of 16:20 . . . his fastest time in the 1,600 meters was 4:32, and his best time in the 3,200 was 9:32 . . . earned the Team Leadership Award in cross country his senior year . . . was a captain in both cross country and track his senior year.
Personal: Majoring in computer science . . . brother Austin is also on the TU track team . . . son of Noel Cookson and Jane Fitzgerald.
In eight years as a member of Conference USA, Tulsa athletic teams have won a league-best 48 conference championships.
