Both the Tulsa men's and women's distance medley relay squads claimed victory in the event, while Bryce Robinson and Chase Sammons broke their school records in the 200-meter dash and weight throw, respectively, during the first day of the 2013 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The men's squad sits in second place with 35 points scored through five events. UTEP leads the pack with 47 points.

"It was a solid day for us," commented Head Coach Steve Gulley. "We have to have another solid day tomorrow to have a shot of winning something. We have to hit on all cylinders, and we will need a little bit of luck tomorrow to defend our title."

In the men's distance medley relay, junior Brian Tabb, senior Matt Davis, junior Danny Thater and senior Chris O'Hare clocked a time of 9:54.10 to set the CrossPlex record and defeated UTEP by almost three seconds.

The Golden Hurricane finished 2-5 in the 5,000-meters to net 23 points in the event. Senior Paulo Pinheiro led the TU charge finishing in second in 14:23.64, while freshman Marc Scott was third in 14:25.70. Scott's time puts him fifth in program history. Sophomore Tim Rackers claimed fourth-place in 14:25.28, and junior Dennis Hodapp snared fifth with a time of 5:28.53.

In the weight throw, Sammons's toss of  53 feet, 7 inches broke his previous record by three feet to earn a seventh-place showing. Freshman Alex Lybarger was ninth with a heave of 49 feet, 9 inches.



Freshman Simon Greiner and O'Hare qualified for the finals of the 800-meter run, with times of 1:53.19 and 1:54.14, respectively during the preliminary round of the event. Greiner earned the fastest time during qualifying.

Robinson broke his school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.23, which was the fastest time during qualifying. Teammate Julian Frazier was third in qualifying in 21.61.

Robinson snared the second-fastest qualifying time in the 60-meter dash, crossing the line in 6.70. He will be joined in tomorrow's final by fellow freshman John Teeters, who had a time of 6.81.

In the men's heptathlon, senior Alex Sementelli sits in eighth-place with 2,620 points after four events. Sophomore Colt Johnson is in 11th-place with 2,320 points and freshman Tyler Stroth is in 13th-place with 2,263 points.


The distance medley relay squad of seniors Lauren Collette, Caroline Schuester, Done Vermaak and Melanie Hughes won the event with a time of 8:40.60 to highlight action for the Tulsa women's track and field squad at the 2013 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The squad sits in 10th place with 13 points after six events.

Senior Carolin Imhof earned a seventh-place showing in the pentathlon with 3,502 points. Imhof had the third-best mark in the long jump with a jump of 18 feet, 3.75 inches.  

Sophomore Brandi Krieg was eighth in the 5,000-meters with a time of 17:20.87, while fellow sophomore Natasha Cockram was ninth in 17:23.10.

Junior Katherine Camp logged the fastest time during the qualifying round of the 800-meter run, crossing the line in 2:10.96. Senior Lauren Collette snared the final spot in tomorrow's final with a time of 2:12.58.
