HOUSTON - The University of Tulsa track and field teams kicked off the 2011 Conference USA Outdoor Championships Thursday at Rice Soccer/Track Stadium.

The Golden Hurricane had four student-athletes compete in the first half of both the heptathlon and decathlon.

Sophomore Alex Sementelli led the way for Tulsa at the midway point of the decathlon as he currently sits in third place with 3,601 points. Fellow sophomore Kolton Taylor is in a tie for fifth with 3,463 points.

Sementelli had a stellar day that saw him win both the Long Jump and the 400-meter dash. His mark of 7.04m in the Long Jump was the fourth-best leap in school history, and he won the 400m with a season-best time of 49.84m.

He also posted fourth-place finishes in both the 100m dash (11.21) and Shot Put (season-best mark of 11.99m), while finishing 10th in the High Jump (1.69m).

Taylor recorded season-best marks in all five events, beginning with his second-place finish in the 100m dash (11.09).

He also tied for third in the High Jump (1.84m), while finishing fifth in the Long Jump (6.73m), sixth in the 400m dash (53.02) and seventh in the Shot Put (10.73m).

On the women's side, senior Brianna Steel and sophomore Carolin Imhof are in sixth and seventh in the heptathlon, respectively.

Steel's best performance of the day came in the Shot Put, where she finished third after recording a throw of 10.86m. She also finished in fifth in both the High Jump (1.60m) and the 200m dash (26.35), while finishing sixth in the 100m Hurdles (15.07).

Imhof's best event was the 100m Hurdles, and she recorded a fourth-place finish of 14.75. She also finished eighth in the Shot Put (9.53m), ninth in the High Jump (1.45m) and 10th in the 200m dash (27.07).

The completion of the multi-events will take place May 13 at the Rice Soccer/Track Stadium. The day will also include the Hammer Throw and the 10,000-meter run.
