Sophomore Chase Sammons won the men's discus with a school-record throw, while senior Erin Huddleston won the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase in a program-best time to highlight action for the Tulsa track and field squad on Saturday at the 2013 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.  

The men's squad still sits in first-place with 59 points heading into the final day of the meet, while the women are in 11th with 13 points.

On the men's side, Sammons won the discus with a heave of 183 feet to break his own school record in the event. Freshman Alex Lybarger just missed scoring, finishing in ninth with a throw of 139 feet, 6 inches.

In the steeplechase, TU nabbed four top-eight finishes. Senior James Keilbarth ran a time of 9:16.28, the third-fastest time in school history, to finish third. Junior Emmett Cookson claimed fourth crossing the line in 9:26.52. Sophomore Aaron Thornburg clocked a time of 9:28.67 to finish sixth, and senior Will LePage was seventh in 9:33.81.

In the men's 100-meter dash prelims, freshmen Bryce Robinson and John Teeters clocked times of 10.46 and 10.52, respectively, to qualify for tomorrow's finals.



The duo also qualified in the 200-meter dash finals, as Teeters earned a time of 21.44, while Robinson earned the last spot in the finals clocking in at 21.52.

In the prelims of the men's 400-meter dash, Julian Frazier's time of 47.81 was the third fastest of the day to move on to the finals.

The final qualifier for the TU men was Simon Greiner in the 800-meter run, as the freshman had the fifth fastest qualifying time of 1:52.30 to advance.

For the TU women, Huddleston won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a school record time of 10:25.89, breaking her previous school record of 10:40.92 set earlier this year.

The senior duo of Sarah Macpherson and Melanie Hughes advanced to the finals of the 1,500-meter run. Macpherson earned a time of 4:41.48, while Hughes clocked in at 4:37.42.

Junior Katherine Camp moved on to the final round of the women's 800-meter run clocking in at 2:11.04.

Senior Caroline Schuster earned a spot in tomorrow's 400-meter dash final crossing the line in 54.29

"We're proud of Chase Sammons and Erin Huddleston for their wins today," commented Head Coach Steve Gulley. "We also had some great performances in the men's steeplechase. We look forward to the final day of the meet tomorrow."
