Stones Qualifies For NCAA Championship In Steeplechase

AUSTIN, Texas - Senior Carl Stones qualified for the NCAA Championship by finishing fifth in the 3,000m Steeplechase at the NCAA West Preliminary Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Stones placed second in his heat with a time of 8:51.03, and he is one of 12 competitors from the region who advanced to the NCAA Championship.
"Carl ran the perfect race today," Tulsa Head Coach Steve Gulley said. "This is a tough race, with everyone just trying to qualify for nationals. He did what he had to do to survive, and we couldn't have asked for more."
Stones will now compete in the national semifinals at 7:25 p.m. June 7 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. There will be two heats, with the top six per heat plus the next two fastest times advancing to the national championship at 11:52 a.m. June 9.
He will be the first Tulsa runner to ever compete in the steeplechase at the NCAA Championship.
There are still four Tulsa athletes left to compete at the preliminary meet May 26. Freshman Chase Sammons will compete in the discus beginning at 11 a.m.
Senior Bill Martin and junior Chris O'Hare will compete in the 1,500-meter quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Senior Paulo Pinheiro will run in the 5,000m semifinals at 8:05 p.m., and junior Ashley Scott will also compete in the 5000m semifinals at 8:45 p.m.
