AUSTIN, Texas - Junior All-American Chris O'Hare advanced to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships by finishing sixth in the 1,500m quarterfinals Saturday night at the 2012 NCAA Division I West Preliminary at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The indoor mile national champion will compete in the semifinals of the 1,500 meters at 6:15 p.m. June 7 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
The semifinal round will consist of two heats, and the top five in each heat plus the next best two times will advance to the national championship race at 11:17 a.m. June 9.
O'Hare reached the finals last year, where he finished 11th overall and was named a USTFCCCA Second Team All-American.
"Chris did what he needed to do today to get to the next round. He picked his spot and made sure he was in the top five at the end of the race," Tulsa Head Coach Steve Gulley said. "I was proud with how everybody else competed. They all ran well today."
O'Hare joins senior Carl Stones, who qualified for the NCAA Championship in the 3,000m Steeplechase yesterday.
Freshman Chase Sammons finished 34th in the discus throw with a toss of 51.11m (167-08).
Junior Ashley Scott placed 42nd in the women's 5,000m run with a mark of 17:40.01.
