May 28, 2011
EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Paula Whiting and sophomore Chris O'Hare posted NCAA Championship qualifying marks on the final day of the 2011 Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round Saturday at Historic Hayward Field.
Whiting placed sixth in the 5,000 with a mark of 16:04.84, and O'Hare finished 12th in the 1,500 clocking a time of 3:47.13.
Senior Justin Duncan narrowly missed on the NCAA Championships as he finished eighth in the 1,500 with a time of 3:45.69.
There were 24 runners split into two heats vying for 12 spots in the National Semifinal, and those spots went to the top five runners in each heat, plus the next two fastest times. Duncan was .18 from qualifying after finishing eighth in his heat, while O'Hare received one of the automatic spots by placing fourth in his heat.
Whiting is one of 24 runners (12 from the West Preliminary and 12 from the East Preliminary) that will compete in the National Final of the women's 5,000 in Des Moines, Iowa at 8:10 p.m. June 10.
This will be Whiting's second-straight trip to the National Finals, as she placed 15th in last year's showcase.
O'Hare will race in the National Semifinal of the men's 1,500 at 6:15 p.m. June 9. If he is one of the top five in his heat (or the next two fastest times overall), then he will race for a national championship at 12:30 p.m. June 11.
Sophomore Ashley Scott also competed in the women's 5,000, finishing 40th with a time of 17:08.00.
Sophomore Geraint Davies ran in the men's 5,000, finishing 44th with a time of 14:53.03.
