O'Hare Wins USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week
Feb. 18, 2013
NEW ORLEANS -
Tulsa senior Chris O'Hare was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I Men's National Athlete of the Week, the organization announced today.
O'Hare shattered the collegiate mile record at the 106th Millrose Games clocking a time of 3:52.98 in the prestigious Wanamaker Mile against some of the worlds top athletes.
O'Hare's time of 3:52.98 obliterated the time of 3:54.54 set last year at the Millrose Games by BYU's Miles Batty. O'Hare's mark also is the second fastest time by a British athlete, and shattered his old personal best of 3:56.48, which also happened to be the school record.
This marked the second time in as many weeks O'Hare broke one of his school records, as last weekend he broke his record in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:48.28 at the Tyson Invitational. That time ranks ninth nationally, and O'Hare is the only runner in the country to have a top-10 national time in the 800 and mile.
"It's a great honor," commented Head Coach Steve Gulley. "We are extremely happy for Chris, and we are happy for the university for the recognition he brings to TU. We still have some racing to do, and Chris still has some goals that he needs to accomplish."
This marks the first time O'Hare or a Tulsa athlete has earned this accolade, as this marks the first year the USTFCCCA has awarded national athlete of the week honors. Awarded to six collegiate track and field and cross country athletes across the three NCAA divisions, the National Athlete of the Week Award spotlights exceptional performances by student-athletes from around the nation. The award seeks to highlight not only the very best times, marks and scores on a week-to-week basis, but also performances that were significant on the national landscape and/or the latest in a series of strong outings.
