O'Hare Named C-USA Indoor Track Athlete of the Week
Feb. 19, 2013
IRVING, Texas -
After being named USTFCCCA Division I Men’s National Athlete of the Week yesterday, Conference USA announced that Tulsa senior Chris O’Hare was named the Conference USA Indoor Male Track and Field Athlete of the Week for his record-setting performance at the Millrose Games.
O’Hare crushed the collegiate indoor mile record at the 106th Millrose Games in New York City on Saturday clocking a time of 3:52.98 in the prestigious Wanamaker Mile against some of the worlds top athletes.
O'Hare's time was over a second and a half faster than the previous record of of 3:54.54 set last year by BYU's Miles Batty at the Millrose Games. O'Hare's mark also is the second fastest time by a British athlete, and shattered his old personal best of 3:56.48, which also happened to be the school record. In addition to his indoor mile record, he also claimed the collegiate-best 1500 meters with an en-route time of 3:37.25, bettering the 3:38.2 (hand-time) set by Villanova’s Sydney Maree in 1979.
This marked the second time this season a TU athlete has won the award, as freshman Bryce Robinson was recognized by the conference office on Feb. 5 after he set the Tulsa school record in the 60-meter dash.
O’Hare and the rest of the track and field team will compete at the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championship on Feb. 23-24 in Birmingham, Ala.
