10 TU Track Athletes Selected For NCAA West Preliminary

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The University of Tulsa track and field teams had 10 individuals earn spots in the 2012 NCAA West Preliminary, which will be held May 24-26 in Austin, Texas at Mike A. Meyers Stadium.
The top 48 times in each individual event and top 24 times in relay events were selected from each region to compete. All competitors will be looking to qualify for the 2012 NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Leading the way for TU is junior All-American and NCAA Indoor mile champion Chris O'Hare. He enters the NCAA regionals with the second-fastest qualifying mark of 3:37.95 in the 1,500m run. He finished 13th at the NCAA Championship last year to earn USTFCCCA Second Team All-America honors.
O'Hare also competed at regionals his freshman season, and this past weekend he defended his titles in the 800m and 1,500m at the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Three other members of the Golden Hurricane will also compete in the 1,500. Seniors Bill Martin, Tom Marshall and junior Sam Masters all posted qualifying times. Martin enters the event with the 30th best time in the west region of 3:46.11. Marshall's time of 3:46.45 ranked No. 35, and Masters recorded the 45th-best mark of 3:46.80.
Marshall will run at the preliminaries for the second-straight season, while Martin and Masters will be making their first appearances.
Senior Carl Stones posted the fifth-fastest time of 8:43.79 in the 3,000m Steeplechase, and he qualified for regionals for the third-straight year. The two-time C-USA champ in the event was unable to compete last year due to an injury.
Senior Paulo Pinheiro recorded the 38th-best 5,000m run of 14:08.03. Pinheiro won Conference USA Championships in the 5K and the 10K, and he will run at his first NCAA regional.
Freshman Chase Sammons won the Conference USA Championship in the discus throw, and his top mark this year of 53.24m (173-05) was good for 39th best in the region.
Junior Julian Frazier posted the 41st-best 400m dash of 47.12. He is scheduled to make his first-career appearance at regionals.
Juniors Sarah Macpherson and Ashley Scott will represent the women at the event. Macpherson will compete in the 1,500 after she posted the 38th-best time of 4:25.86. Scott ran the 39th-best 5,000 of 16:38.91.
Scott returns to the NCAA West Preliminary for the second-straight year, while Macpherson will experience the national event for the first time in her career.
