IRVING, Texas - Senior Paula Whiting and junior Carl Stones were named to the 2011 Conference USA Track & Field All-Academic Teams, the league announced today following a vote by the league's sports information contacts for the sport.

Both members of the Golden Hurricane have excelled this season in the classroom and on the track.

Whiting carries a 3.93 grade-point average in exercise sport science and recently qualified for the NCAA Championship Finals in the 5,000. She will run for a national championship at 8:10 p.m. June 10 in Des Moines, Iowa.

She won four conference championships this past year, with two coming in both the indoor (mile, 3,000) and outdoor (1,500, 5,000) campaigns.

Stones earned a 3.73 GPA in exercise sport science. He captured the Conference USA Championship in the 3,000m Steeplechase at the outdoor championship and won the bronze medal in the 3,000 at the indoor championship.

Stones also qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary in the 3,000m Steeplechase but was unable to run due to injury.

This was the second-career All-Academic Team selection for both individuals.

To be considered for the laurel, a student-athlete must hold a minimum 3.2 GPA and have used a year of eligibility for the indoor and outdoor seasons. This year's honorary squad includes 18 recipients of the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal, including seven perfect 4.00 GPAs.
