Assistant Coach - Track & Field/Cross Country

Octavious Gillespie-Bennett begins his second season as an assistant track and field coach at the University of Tulsa.

Gillespie-Bennett comes to Tulsa from the University of California-Los Angeles where he spent two seasons as the decathlon coach and jumps assistant. While at UCLA, he helped guide five student-athletes to top-10 finishes at the Pac-10 Championships. In 2008, Gillespie-Bennett worked with freshmen Taylor Hobson and Jonathan Clark, helping guide them to top-20 finishes in jump events at the NCAA Championships.

Before joining the Bruins coaching staff, he spent four years as an academic assistant within the UCLA athletic department. Gillespie-Bennett served as the Assistant Athletic Tutorial Manager for UCLA athletic programs from 2005 to 2006. In that role he monitored student-athlete tutorial participation, enforced athletic tutorial guidelines and worked to maintain a healthy learning environment for all student-athletes. He was also a UCLA Student-Athlete Academic Mentor and men's track and field study hall monitor from 2003 to 2005.

Gillespie-Bennett also served as the field event coach for Brentwood High School from 2004 to 2005. There he coached four individual league champions, and assisted in meet operations and coached all field events.

Gillespie-Bennett earned two letters at UCLA, where he received his bachelor of arts in history in 2003.

He competed in the Pan-American Games in 2003 and 2007, and currently holds the Guatemalan National Record in the Javelin (65.87m) and Decathlon (7448).
