The University of Tulsa women's cross country team claimed first-place and the men's squad finished second at the 2008 Hurricane Festival at Mohawk Park on Saturday morning. Senior Edwin Henshaw won the men's individual title finishing the four-mile course with a time of 20:03, and junior Lana Kelley claimed second-place in the women's race running the two-mile course in 11:29.
Oklahoma's Kelly Waters won the women's individual title with a time of 11:22.
The Hurricane women's team placed four runners in the top seven spots, including junior Dawn Nagazina who finished third behind Kelley with a time of 11:33. Teammates Maryke Rossouw and Laura Englehutt finished in times of 11:49 and 11:50 respectively, to record sixth and seventh-place marks.
"For the season opener I think our whole team did really well," said Lana Kelley. "There were a lot of good teams here and it was a great way for us to start off the season."
On the men's side, Tulsa turned in two of the top-three finishes with Henshaw claiming first-place and sophomore Josh Butts finishing third with a time of 20:10. Oral Roberts edged out TU for the team title with a second-place finish from Jonah Lagat, a fourth-place mark from Shadrack Koech and Joseph Chebaibai finishing sixth.
Head Coach Steve Gulley was pleased not only with the Tulsa's results, but also with the turnout for the annual event.
"We were excited to have Oklahoma and Oklahoma State come and we were doing back flips to have Oral Roberts join us this year," said Gulley. "It is so nice to have the major universities in the state over here and I think everybody was really looking forward to it."
