Cross Country Begins 2014 Season with Hurricane XC Festival
Aug. 30, 2014
The men's four-mile and women's two-mile races represented the first events of the new year for Tulsa, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Louisiana-Monroe and Wichita State. The Golden Hurricane women's squad completed the meet with a team duels record of 1-2-1. The Hurricane men's side posted a 2-3 mark in the team duels. TU Head Coach Steve Gulley was pleased with his team's performance in the meet.
"I was happy with the performance overall as a team," Gulley said. "I think we worked together, and that was the goal. We have a lot of new kids and some older kids, and we're just trying to mesh them together. On the men's side, they did some really good pacing and worked out well. The women got out a little bit slow, but we were able to pick it up. I was happy with the performance. Our goal was to work as a team today, and not be individuals."
The TU women defeated Wichita State, 19-38, and tied Oklahoma 28-28, then narrowly fell to Oklahoma State, 29-27, and to Arkansas, 34-21.
The Hurricane men's team defeated Wichita State, 23-38, and Louisiana-Monroe, 20-43, and fell to Oklahoma, 37-18, Oklahoma State, 39-16, and Arkansas, 42-17.
Senior Natasha Cockram paced the Tulsa women with a sixth-place time of 11:20 in the two-mile race, and was followed by sophomore Olivia Lopez, who placed seventh with a time of 11:21. Freshmen Nicole Lee and Anna Bearss each ran the race in 11:32, placing 16th and 17th, respectively. Sophomore Olivia O'Hare rounded out the TU scoring with a 19th-overall time of 11:33.
All of the Hurricane men's runners finished in succession, placing between 22nd and 27th overall in the race. Freshman Adam Roderique (21:01) led the way, followed by freshman Steven Salvano (21:02), junior Marc Scott (21:02) and freshman Peter Hodkinson (21:02). Freshman Kirk Smith (21:05) and sophomore Dallas Elmore (21:05) closed out the TU group.
The Golden Hurricane returns to action at the Missouri Southern Stampede on Sept. 20 in Joplin, Mo. TU will run again in Tulsa this season, as the Hurricane plays host to the American Athletic Conference Championships Oct. 31 at Mohawk Park.
