HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Tulsa men's cross country team won its third straight Conference USA Championship, and the TU women's team finished in second place Monday morning at the Pine Belt National Golf Course.

Junior Chris O'Hare finished second in the 8K in 24:03.4 to lead the Golden Hurricane, which placed all five scorers among the top-nine finishers. TU scored 25 team points to finish 31 points ahead of second-place UTEP's score of 56 points.

Senior Sarah Macpherson placed fifth in the 5K in 17:11.8 to lead the TU women to a second-place finish, behind SMU. The Hurricane placed all five scorers among the top-16 finishers, but its 57 points fell short of the Mustangs' 38 team points. Tulsa's women's team finished runner-up at the C-USA meet for second straight year.

Head Coach Steve Gulley was named C-USA Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year, and Andrew Heyes was named Outstanding Senior of the Meet.

"The maturity of the upperclassmen was big," Gulley said. "They ran well and put us in a comfortable position from the first mile on. It was chilly and a tough course, but they ran well. The women ran great. SMU just ran a better race than we did. We were a little disappointed, but overall the women ran great."

Heyes and fellow senior Paulo Pinheiro ran respective times of 24:10.0 and 24:14.4 to finish third and fourth. Sophomore Dennis Hodapp placed seventh with a time of 24:31.4, and freshman Marc Scott rounded out the TU scorers with a time of 24:36.6 to place ninth.

Sophomore Brandi Krieg finished 11th with a time of 17:34.0, and was followed in order by senior Ashley Scott, who ran a 17:35.0 to place 12th, and junior Josie Wilcox, who ran a 17:36.6 to place 13th. Senior Erin Huddleston capped the Hurricane scoring with a 16th-place time of 17:44.7.

Sophomore Lauren Collette and senior Melanie Hughes placed 17th and 21st with respective times of 17:47.9 and 17:50.7 for the Hurricane.

TU Junior Kevin Mayer (25:28.2) and sophomore Brian Tabb (25:44.3) also finished 19th and 25th on the men's side, while freshman Olivia O'Hare (17:56.3) and sophomore Natasha Cockram (18:10.6) placed 23rd and 30th on the women's side.

All nine men's runners Tulsa ran at the meet finished in the top-25, while all nine TU women's runners at the meet finished among the top-30.

The Golden Hurricane will next run at the Midwest Regional Championships on Nov. 9 in Springfield, Mo.
