Aug. 29, 2007
Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa cross country teams will kick off the 2007 season when they host the Hurricane Festival at Mohawk Park on September 1, 2007. Squads from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are scheduled to participate in the festival. The collegiate meet begins at 8:00 am with the men, followed by the women at 8:30 am. The high school portion of the festival will begin at 9:10 am.
Tulsa's men's team returns a majority of the squad that finished second at the Conference USA Championships and eighth at the Midwest Regional last year. The experience squad includes five seniors and a total of nine letterwinners. One member of the team, junior Edwin Henshaw, recently won the Senior New Zealand Cross Country title. The win qualified him to represent New Zealand in the World Cross Country Champions in Edinburgh, Scotland in March 2008. Other top performers include Brett Turowski, Joel Stansloski, and Eric Harris.
After one of the most successful seasons in TU cross country history, the Hurricane women return 11 letterwinners. The team's eighth place finish at the Midwest Regional was the Tulsa's best finish ever, while the Hurricane also finished fourth at the Conference USA Championships. Tulsa has two returning all-conference performers, including first-team selection Alex Becker and third-teamer Dawn Nagazina. Becker, a junior, finished 13th at the Midwest Regional, earning an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships, where she finished 34th, the best finish in TU history.
