Sept. 18, 2008
Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa cross country teams continue the 2008 season when they head to Missouri Southern State University to take part in the Southern Stampede on Saturday, Sept. 20 in Joplin, Mo. Tulsa joins a field of 40 schools including 10th-ranked Arkansas and Oklahoma.
"It has become a tradition for us to go to this event," said Head Coach Steve Gulley. "We like to stay in a routine to see how our training is going. It is a great course and there is going to be a lot of good competition there. This is going to be a good test for us, and a great opportunity to check and see where we are at."
Tulsa is coming off of a strong performance at the Hurricane Festival hosted on Aug. 30 at Mohawk Park. The women's team captured the team title behind the legs of junior Lana Kelley, who finished second in the two-mile race, and junior Dawn Nagazina who finished just seconds behind her teammate for third place. The men's team came in second place, led by senior Eddie Henshaw who captured the individual title in the four-mile race.
The Hurricane ran well in the Southern Stampede last year as the women's team won the team title and the men's team finished sixth. All-American Alex Becker captured first place in the women's 5k race, while John Beattie and Eddie Henshaw finished sixth and seventh respectively, in the men's 8k course.
The women's 5k race starts at 9 a.m. with the men's 8k following at 9:45 a.m. from Hughes Stadium in Joplin, Mo.
