Today we competed in Joplin, Missouri. We all left at 6:00am this morning. Before we got in the vans each athlete was supplied with their own "snack pack" which consisted of cereal, granola bars, pop tarts, fruit, Gatorade and water. It took us about 1 hour and 45 minutes to drive there. It was quite a quiet ride on the way there because all of us were wrapped up in our sleep. When we arrived we all jogged the course together. After our warm up it was time for us to go to the starting line. There were 216 girls on the line, and there were 24 teams all together. Before the gun went off our team did a cheer! Our goal was to get out aggressively in our first mile, and everyone on our team was able to accomplish that!

I completed my first mile in 5:30, and I was happy with that as it was a 15 second improvement from my previous race. I ran the first mile with my roommate Renine Le Heron, and we could also see our teammate Natalie Rasmussen 8 seconds ahead of us. We began to lose sight of Natalie after the first mile because she was sitting in 7th place! Renine and I continued to push each other throughout the race because we new that we had to try and hold on as every point counts for the final placing of our team. The race was 5km and the course was fairly fast because there were few hills and the surface was short grass. After the first mile my legs began to feel a little heavy because we are still training hard in our practices. We know that our continuous hard work in practice is going to pay off in the upcoming important meets. I ended up finishing in 33rd place with a time of 18:46, and my teammate Renine was right behind me in 34th place.

When all of our teammates came through the line we met near the finish area and talked about how we felt throughout the race. I was fairly happy with my race, but I think there's still room to improve my time. We went for our cool down together and stopped sporadically along the course to cheer for our guys' team. When we finished our jog I immediately went to my snack pack and ate my pop tarts because I usually don't eat sugary snacks before I run. It was then that I found out that our team finished in 5th place overall, and we thought that it was a good performance for our second race of the season. On our way back we stopped at an Italian restaurant for lunch to refuel ourselves for the ride home. By the time we got back to campus I was ready for a nap because some of my teammates and I had planned to go and watch the football game against the Navy school. It was my first time watching TU's football team play, so I enjoyed it. Although I still like watching Canadian hockey a little bit better than football. Now that I'm back from the game I'm going to go to sleep because tomorrow morning we're going for a LSD run on Turkey Mountain!
