Joel Stansloski Diary Entry
We had our second meet of the season yesterday, in Joplin Missouri; it was the Southern Stampede put on by Missouri Southern University. It was a good field, including the Arkansas, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma, as well as 20 other teams. We had a bit of a rough day finishing in the middle of the pack, 14th. We are a very young team, as the five runners who placed for us were all freshman (two red-shirt, and three true). So, we have a lot of growing up to-do, and hopefully by conference, we will be able to defend our Western Athletic Conference title.
Today, we had our weekly long run, at 6:30 in the morning to beat the heat. Running in the morning kind of seems like a bad deal at first, but it's not to terrible, because it frees up the rest of the day and you can catch a nap later on, when everyone else is out practicing in the sweltering heat. So, we started our run at 6:30 from Derrick Smiths House in Supulpa, which is just outside of Tulsa, and ran around 13.5 miles in about 85 minutes. Afterward, Derrick's parents made pancakes and sausage for us, and we hung out by the pool. Derrick's dad showed us his sweet 1967 Ford Mustang, it has a 1200-watt stereo system and a 5.0-liter engine, and it's quite a nice ride.
The rest of the day was very relaxing, I just chilled with a couple of my teammates, Brett Turowski, and Jay Matlack, and we watched some football. My team the Cleveland Browns lost to Brett's team the Dallas Cowboys 19-12 so there was some definite trash talk going down, but it's all good, we will get'um next time. I went to dinner in the café which isn't to bad, once you get used to it, and then headed of to study hall, which all freshman athletes have to do. The study hall hours aren't to bad you get some good quiet time to study and you can always do math homework on your calculator. Then, after study hall I went to the Collins Fitness Center for some Badminton, and then I went back to my room watched some more football and headed of to bed, in preparation for Mondays workout.
