TU Cross Country Sweeps C-USA Athlete of the Week Honors, Men ranked 19th NationallyOct. 7, 2008
Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa cross country teams swept the Conference USA Cross Country Athlete of the Week awards, with John Beattie claiming the men's honor and Alex Becker winning the women's award. The men's team also earned its first national ranking of the season coming in at No. 19 in the latest poll released by the U.S. Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Becker was named the C-USA Cross Country Female Athlete of the Week after claiming third place at the Notre Dame Invitational, running the 5k course in 16:36. It is the fourth time in Becker's career to win the award. Beattie earned his first-ever Athlete of the Week honor after leading the Hurricane to a second-place finish at the Notre Dame Invitational, finishing the five-mile race in 23:43 for a seventh-place finish. The men's team climbed to 19th in the USTFCCCA Division 1 National Poll, receiving 142 votes as a result of its impressive finish at the Notre Dame Invitational. "It's a great compliment to the program," Head Coach Steve Gulley said about the national ranking. "I think the guys respect the national attention, but it is just the first step in our goal of winning a national championship."
