Nov. 14, 2012
TULSA, Okla. - Tulsa junior Chris O'Hare was named Midwest Region Athlete of the Year and TU Head Coach Steve Gulley was named Midwest Region Coach of the Year, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced.
In addition, the Golden Hurricane men, which moved up to No. 12 in the USTFCCCA Coaches Poll this week, placed six runners on the All-Midwest Region Team. All six runners - O'Hare, seniors Andrew Heyes and Paulo Pinheiro, sophomores Dennis Hodapp and Danny Thater, and freshman Marc Scott - placed among the top-25 at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet.
The TU men run at the NCAA Championships Saturday in Louisville, Ky. The men's race begins at 12:15 p.m. CT.
"I was shocked and quite surprised," Gulley said of being named Regional Coach of the Year. "I give a lot of credit to the young men. I think these honors are important for our program and for the direction we're trying to go. We just need to have a strong finish to the season this weekend at nationals."
O'Hare won the Midwest Regional individual championship with a 10K time of 30:25.87. He also won the Notre Dame Invitational with an 8K personal record time of 23:33, and finished second at the Conference USA Championships with an 8K time of 24:03.4.
Gulley coached Tulsa to its third straight Conference USA Championships and a third-place finish at the Midwest Regional Championships, which featured the individual win by O'Hare. The current No. 12 Golden Hurricane was ranked as high as No. 9 in the national poll this season after winning the Notre Dame Invitational on Sept. 28.
