Emmett Davis, the former head basketball coach at Colgate University, was appointed to an assistant coaching position at The University of Tulsa in May 2011. Davis came to Tulsa after spending the previous 13 seasons as the head coach at Colgate (1998-2011), where he became the school's all-time winningest head coach with 165 career victories. Davis and Tulsa Head Coach Doug Wojcik were on the same coaching staff at the U.S. Naval Academy for eight seasons (1990-98) helping lead the Midshipmen to three NCAA Tournament appearances. During Davis' tenure, he led Colgate to either the upper Division of the Patriot League standings or advanced the team to the semifinals or the championship game of the conference tournament in nine of his 13 seasons. Davis was released from his head coaching position on March 16th after the Raiders posted a 7-23 record. He finished his career at Colgate with a 165-212 mark. In his first year as the Colgate head coach, Davis led his team to a 14-14 record and advanced to the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament. In his fourth season, the 2001-02 campaign, the Raiders posted a 17-11 record, which was the best record at Colgate since 1994-95. Colgate's best season under Davis came during the 2007-2008 season when the Raiders advanced to the Patriot League championship game and tied a school record for wins with 18. In that season, Davis became the school's all-time leader for career victories when he reached his 138th win against Bucknell in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament. Davis also recruited and coached current Tulsa assistant coach Jeremy Ballard for four seasons from 1999-2003. Before taking over the Colgate helm, Davis served as an assistant coach for 12 years at the U.S. Naval Academy (1986-98), where he was involved with all aspects of the program. He was responsible for working with the guards during his early years at Navy and worked with the post players over his final four seasons. In his 12 seasons, Navy won four conference championships while advancing to the NCAA Tournament in each of those four seasons. In Davis' first season at Navy, he coached Wojcik and National Player of the Year David Robinson. The Midshipmen registered 26 wins, a Colonial Athletic Association Championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament that year. A native of Gloversville, NY, Davis played under former Navy and Pittsburgh Head Coach Paul Evans while at St. Lawrence University. He began his coaching career in 1981 at his alma mater as a student assistant coach. Davis then served as a full-time assistant coach at St. Lawrence for three years (1981-84). Davis' wife, Gail, played college basketball at LaSalle, where she was a four-year letterwinner, and later was an assistant coach at LaSalle, Navy and Georgetown. They have three sons: Emmett, Shane and Brendan. |
