Tulsa-UCF Post-Game Quotes
Tulsa Head Coach Doug Wojcik Opening Statement:
"That was a really hard-fought win for us - a great win. The crowd really got into the game. We had a lot of students here. We didn't have a lot of fast-break opportunities, but we hung in there and found a way to win. I'm really proud of the guys. They showed a lot of toughness and passion tonight. At the end of the day, they showed a lot of character. I'm really proud of them."
On what was discussed in the final timeout taken by Tulsa when the team was down one...
"I think it was right after Tim Peete had missed the layup in transition. He probably thought he was getting fouled. We came out of that timeout and our guys did a great job. They drove the ball and they were more aggressive. We've been preaching to them the whole game about the rebounding. UCF deserves a lot of credit. They kicked our butts on the glass. I told the team afterwards that they really responded coming out of that timeout. At the next timeout (called by UCF), we were down one and now we're up five. I thought that stretch showed a lot of toughness and a lot of character."
On Scottie Haralson's performance...
"He hit some big shots early, and he got us off to a great start. We ran a play for him coming off the tipoff, and he knocked down the three at the top of the key. I felt like (UCF) would probably put (Isaiah) Sykes on Jordan (Clarkson) because he is a big defender and a strong kid. We went to Scottie to start the game and he really responded. He got the crowd into it right away."
Tulsa junior guard Scottie Haralson
On his hot start...
"I was just focusing on trying to knock down whatever open shot I had. I got in a groove and I was feeling it. It kept us in the game in the first half. We had composure and it paid off for us."
Tulsa sophomore guard Jordan Clarkson
On the last possession...
"Coming down the court on the last play, I just kept saying that we have to finish the game. That was our motto going into this year - finishing. These last games we have been finishing strong, and that was going through my head the whole time."
UCF Head Coach Donnie Jones
On how the game changed after halftime...
"We got down 10 and Scottie Haralson shot the ball extremely well tonight. He's a good shooter. I'll give Tulsa credit. I thought they played extremely well tonight. We had a chance there: we cut it to a two-point deficit with Keith [Clanton] on the bench with two fouls and A.J. Rompza on the bench for awhile with two fouls. Having both those guys out, we just don't have a lot of depth in those positions. We played Marcus [Jordan] a lot at point guard tonight. I'd like to have him a lot more off the ball than on the ball. You know, we had a chance. We had two or three opportunities on a free throw, we didn't get the rebound on one and the other got tipped in. We had our opportunities tonight, but give Tulsa credit. They made the plays and we didn't handle things well down the stretch, which we'll learn from. It's not a one-game season. Our basketball team will learn from this and, the good news is, we get a chance to play again in 48 hours."
On the technical fouls committed by UCF late in the game...
"They have to learn to control those situations. We respect officials and whatever calls they make are what we'll go with. I think those guys, regardless of talking to each other or talking to their teammates, they have to make sure to handle it the right way."
On the strength of C-USA teams this season...
"Obviously, Tulsa is very talented as you've seen tonight and their size and athleticism bothered us, especially Keith [Clanton] inside most of the game. You see Southern Miss and Memphis and Marshall and Tulsa - there's a lot of good teams in this league. We've played seven games right now, and we're already at the halfway point and there's still a lot of basketball to be played. You can see there's a lot of parity. It's hard to win on the road in this league because there's good coaches and good players."
