TULSA-WICHITA STATE POST-GAME QUOTES

TULSA HEAD COACH Danny Manning
Opening statement...
"Wichita State is a very talented basketball team. They play hard. They execute well. We've talked about Cleanthony Early before. Ron Baker shot the ball very well, and Fred VanVleet did a great job at point. We went in to the halftime tied. For the number of free throws that we missed, I thought that we should have had the lead. The second half rolls around, and they start to kick it in. We're disappointed and upset but we need to find a way."

On the message to the players in the locker room...
"We got beat. We need to get better. There are no moral victories. Moral victories don't make you better. We want to have a second half similar to our first half. That is the message to our guys. We have to continue to fight and get better and execute."

On the team's free throw shooting...
"We have played three games. We shot it poorly two times, and we shot it well one time. I don't know. It is a situation where we just have to step up there and make the shots."

On Wichita State's Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet...
"I wasn't worried. Baker and VanVleet are talented players, and they do what they need to do to make their team successful. It doesn't matter what you do. It matters what your team does and what each player brings to the team. Baker and VanVleet are really talented guards. VanVleet controlled the game. He isn't super jet quick, but he has quick bursts, gets into the paint, and makes things happen. They have some good players, but he makes them go.

On Tulsa's strengths and weaknesses...
"We could have made some more shots in rhythm, but I think that we did a good job of getting to the free throw line. We just didn't convert. I think that we might have had more points in the paint. We just have to make our free throws, get rebounds, and pull down fifty-fifty balls."

On the last eight minutes of the game...
"Everybody knows that Wichita State is a hard-nosed, tough team. They get after it, and there was a stretch in the second half where they did those things. We didn't."

On looking ahead to Creighton...
"I have only looked at stats on Creighton. I'll start watching film tonight and breaking things down. Our scout coach has a game plan, and he will brief me on it tonight. Until now, my focus was on Wichita State.

TULSA SENIOR GUARD PAT SWILLING
On Wichita State's success during the last eight minutes of the game... "Basketball is a game of runs. They made their runs, and we couldn't fire back. We had our opportunities. We missed a few layups and a few free throws and a few rebounds down the stretch. We grab or make those chances and it could switch momentum, but we didn't make those plays down the stretch. This has pretty much been our problem so far this season. We need to make those critical shots at the free throw line. Wichita State is a great team, and I give them all the credit in the world, but I think that we can be a great team also. We just have to make those plays."

On Tulsa's poor free throw shooting...
"We just have to step up to the line and make them. You can't worry about if the last one or two went in. As a player, if you get fouled, you know that you just have to step up to the line and make your free throws. It can start to get in to people's heads, but that can't be an excuse. We make free throws every day. If we shoot one hundred free throws every day and can't make them in a game, then that is on us. It isn't on Coach Manning. It isn't on anybody on the staff. It is on the players. We have to make free throws.

On correcting free throw shooting... "If we're missing free throws and can't make them in a game, it is up to the player to go in the gym on his own and practice. Coach Manning can't make you go. They will fall. We just have to keep working on it, and they will fall."

On the similarity between tonight's game and the game at Wichita State last year...
"I wasn't playing last year, but being up there in that environment, it was a similar story to tonight. With 15 minutes to go, Kauri Black went up for a dunk, the y blocked it, and came back with an and-one. They got on a run, and when a team gets on a run, it goes from two to twenty like that. In order to be the team that we want to be, we just have to keep going back at them again and again."

On looking ahead to Creighton after an 0-3 start to the season...
"This is what basketball players play for. We started off with a rivalry game, and then went to Missouri State. They're a good team. Then we came home and played Wichita State, the 14th ranked team in the country. Now we go to Creighton. You can look at our schedule and everyone will agree that it is tough. Did we expect to be here at 0-3? No, but this is what we play for. We are going to go to Creighton and try to make those adjustments that we didn't make tonight."

WICHITA STATE HEAD COACH GREGG MARSHALL
Opening statement...
"That's the type of second half that we've been waiting for. That's as well as we've played this year and it happened against a team that was giving us everything we had. At halftime it was a tremendous game. They made a great play at the end of the first half to tie it. These guys (WSU) were just tremendous. They were so tough, especially on the glass. We maintained our defensive discipline to cut down those driving lanes and I'm really proud of them."

WICHITA STATE GUARD FRED VANVLEET
On the team's play in the first half...
"In the first half, with Tulsa switching defenses, we weren't getting into our breakdowns fast enough. I think we organized a bit better in the second half. We got an early lead and that extended their defense a little bit so the floor was better spaced and there were more driving lanes. We really rebounded the ball well in the second half and made some big shots."

On the team's attitude going forward after being tied at halftime in the team's past several games...
"We're accepting the challenge and just trying to stay in hunting mode. We're just trying to stay in hunting mode and not be the one getting hunted."

WICHITA STATE GUARD/FORWARD RON BAKER
On the team's first road game...
"First off, I want to congratulate Tulsa. They're a very great team. It's not easy to play in here. It was a tough win. When we came in we knew it would be a tough game. You've got to be 8 to 10 points better on the road as coach (Marshall) always says. Down the stretch we defended, got our rebounds and made open jump shots."
