Dec. 30, 2010
Tulsa, Oklahoma - Tulsa's Justin Hurtt and Steven Idlet combined to score 45 points as the Golden Hurricane held on for a 69-66 victory over TCU on Thursday night in front of 5,143 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Tulsa improved to 7-6 on the season, while the TCU Horned Frogs fell to 9-5 on the season.
Hurtt had a game-high 23 points, while Idlet chipped in with 22 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Scottie Haralson added 16 points for the Hurricane. TCU was led by Ronnie Moss' 19 points.
Both team's struggled from the field for most of the night, shooting an identical 35.5-percent, but when a big shot was needed it seemed like either Hurtt, Idlet or Haralson would answer for the Hurricane. It was a game that saw Tulsa's nine-point first-half lead and a 10-point lead in the second half melt away.
TCU didn't take its first lead of the game until 6:09 remaining in the contest when Moss connected on two free throws to make the score 45-43. From that point, Tulsa scored 26 points in the final 5:46 beginning with a jumper by Justin Hurtt for the sixth tie of the game to make the score 45-45.
After the Hurtt jumper knotted the score, TCU's Greg Hill knocked down a long three-pointer from the top of the key to give the Frogs a 48-45 lead. Idlet's two free throws cut it to one point with 5:16 left in the contest at 48-47. After TCU went back ahead by two points, Idlet knocked down two more free throws to tie the score at 49, then a tip-in basket by D.J.Magley put the Hurricane ahead 51-49 with 3:59 left on the game clock.
TCU knotted the score at 51 on two Moss free throws, while Idlet's jumper put Tulsa ahead by two at the 3:14 mark. After a three-pointer by the Frogs' Nikola Gacesa put TCU back on top by a 55-53 score with 2:16 remaining in the contest, Hurtt and Haralson knocked down the two biggest three's of the game. Hurtt knocked down his three-pointer from the right wing at the 2:03 mark to put the Hurricane up by one point, 56-55. A layup gave TCU a one-point lead, but Haralson's trey from the left wing with 1:02 remaining put Tulsa up for good at 59-57.
The rest of Tulsa's points came from the free throw line, as the Hurricane converted 10-of-10 free throws in the final 0:41. Hurtt knocked down all six freebies, while Idlet and Haralson had two each.
Tulsa opened the second half with a 12-2 run to break the 25-25 tie at halftime as Haralson hit back-to-back shots, a 3-pointer and a two-point basket, to put the Hurricane up by 10 points at 37-27 with 5:30 gone on the clock.
Tulsa began the game with a 6-0 run on two three-pointers by Haralson, and increased its lead to nine, 18-9, on two Idlet free throws at the 11:55 mark.
TCU then went on a 10-1 run over the next 3:34 to knot the score at 19-19. The game was tied three more times in the first half, but the Horned Frogs never took a lead. The first half ended 25-25.
Idlet and Hurtt led the way for the Hurricane with eight points, while Moss had a first-half game-high of 11 points for the Horned Frogs.
