EL PASO, Texas - The Tulsa basketball team faces off against UTEP at 8 p.m. Thursday in a key Conference USA contest at the Don Haskins Center.

The Golden Hurricane (15-12, 10-3 C-USA) has won five in a row and 11 of its last 14 games. The Miners (20-8, 10-3 C-USA) have won two of their last three games and 10 of their last 12 overall. Tulsa and UTEP are two of four teams tied for second place in Conference USA, one game behind Middle Tennessee (11-2 C-USA).

Tulsa Holds off UTEP for 74-70 win
Behind a career-high 25 points from D'Andre Wright and clutch free throw shooting down the stretch, Tulsa picked up a big 74-70 Conference USA win at UTEP Saturday evening at the Don Haskins Center.

Sophomore guard James Woodard leads Tulsa in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Sophomore forward Rashad Smith scores 12.6 points with 5.4 rebounds per game. Shaquille Harrison averages 9.8 points and 3.6 assists per contest. Sophomore forward D'Andre Wright averages 7.4 points, sophomore guard Rashad Ray scores 6.0 points, and Lew Evans scores 5.8 points and 4.1 rebounds per outing, while Tim Peete averages 5.1 points and Brandon Swannegan averages 4.4 points.



The Golden Hurricane averages 73.4 points and 36.4 rebounds per game, shooting .445 from the field, including .340 from 3-point territory. Hurricane opponents average 68.4 points and 35.3 rebounds, while shooting .408 from the field.

UTEP is led by Julian Washburn, who averages 13.0 points and 2.5 assists per game and Vince Hunter, who averages 12.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per contest, and John Bohannon, who averages 11.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.6 blocks per outing. C.J. Cooper leads the team with 2.9 assists and scores 9.8 points, while Cedrick Lang adds 6.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per contest. The Miners average 70.1 points and 36.0 rebounds per game, shooting .471 from the field and .346 from 3-point range. UTEP opponents average 63.9 points and 34.4 rebounds per game, shooting .385 from the field.

This is the 48th meeting between Tulsa and UTEP. Tulsa leads the series 30-17. The Golden Hurricane won both games last year, 45-42 in Tulsa and 74-70 in El Paso. Prior to last season, the schools split the previous two season series, with the home team winning each time. TU won in Tulsa in 2012, 59-48, while UTEP won in El Paso, 64-55. TU also won at home in 2011, 69-68, while the Miners won in El Paso, 69-59, and also took a 66-54 win in the C-USA Tournament. Tulsa's home win in 2011 broke a four-game win streak by UTEP. The Hurricane had previously won four straight in the series. TU holds a slight, 10-9, advantage in the series since both schools joined Conference USA in 2005-06. Tulsa's average victory margin since 2006 is 7.5 points, while UTEP's victory margin is 9.1 points. The Hurricane is 9-10 all-time in El Paso against the Miners.
