PARMLEY ANNOUNCES CHANGE IN LEADERSHIP FOR BASKETBALL PROGRAM
March 11, 2012
TULSA, Okla. - University of Tulsa Director of Athletics Ross Parmley announced on Sunday a change in leadership of the Golden Hurricane basketball program with the dismissal of Doug Wojcik as the school's head basketball coach.
"After substantial consideration, we have decided to make a change in our head basketball coaching position," said Parmley. "This is a business decision based on some serious challenges we have in basketball. Since 2005, we have seen a 35-percent decrease in season ticket sales, a 43-percent decline in revenue and growing apathy among our fan base.
"We appreciate the efforts and contributions Doug has made to our basketball program in his seven years. He has honored our student-athletes and The University of Tulsa through his strong representation of both."
Wojcik completed his seventh season with Tulsa on Thursday afternoon with a 105-100 triple overtime loss to Marshall in the quarterfinal round of the Conference USA Tournament. Wojcik compiled a 140-92 record in his seven seasons at the helm of the Golden Hurricane program and recently became the school's leader in career victories.
In his tenure, Wojcik guided Tulsa to three postseason appearances, winning the CBI Championship in 2008 and advancing to the NIT in 2009 and 2010. Tulsa has failed to advance to the NCAA Tournament in his seven seasons.
Wojcik came to Tulsa after two seasons as an assistant coach at Michigan State University. He was named the Tulsa head coach in March 2005.
"As head coach, Doug Wojcik represented the university and our men's basketball program with great integrity, and we are grateful for his many contributions to TU," said University President Steadman Upham. "As we move in a new direction with this program, we do so wishing Doug every success."
A national search for a new head basketball coach will begin immediately.
