Men's Basketball Opens C-USA Championship vs. Tulane Thursday

EL PASO, Texas - The No. 2-seed Tulsa basketball team opens the 2014 Conference USA Championship with a quarterfinal-round contest against No. 7-seed Tulane at 1 p.m. CT Thursday at the Don Haskins Center.

The Golden Hurricane (18-12, 13-3 C-USA) enters the tournament on an eight-game win streak, and has won 14 of its last 17 games. The Green Wave (17-15, 8-8 C-USA) has won three of its last five games, and defeated North Texas 66-61 in the second round on Wednesday. In the previous meeting between the schools this season, the Hurricane defeated the Wave 97-71 in Tulsa on Jan. 9.

The game will be broadcast on the Hurricane Radio Network, KRMG AM 740/102.3 FM in Tulsa, and network affiliates. Live video can be found on the Conference USA Championship Central page James Woodard leads Tulsa in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Sophomore forward Rashad Smith scores 12.0 points with 5.0 rebounds per game. Shaquille Harrison averages 10.1 points and 3.5 assists per contest. Sophomore forward D'Andre Wright averages 7.3 points, sophomore guard Rashad Ray scores 6.5 points, and Lew Evans scores 5.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per outing, while Tim Peete averages 5.2 points and Brandon Swannegan averages 4.2 points.

Tulsa opened Conference USA play with a resounding 97-71 victory over the Tulane Green Wave in the league opener for both schools Thursday night in front of 3,910 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

The Golden Hurricane averages 73.2 points and 36.3 rebounds per game, shooting .441 from the field, including .325 from 3-point territory. Hurricane opponents average 68.2 points and 35.7 rebounds, while shooting .407 from the field.

This is the 17th meeting between Tulsa and Tulane. Tulsa leads the series, 11-5. The Golden Hurricane has won seven of the last eight meetings, including the 97-71 win on Jan. 9 in Tulsa. TU has won nine games in the series since joining Conference USA in 2005-06, by an average margin of 8.4 points. The Green Wave has won four games in the series since 2005-06, by an average margin of 2.0 points, including two overtime contests. Tulane won the only C-USA Tournament meeting, 58-56, in 2007.
