Tulsa's Wojcik, Cason Promoted to Associate Head Basketball Coaches

Tulsa coaches enter fourth season on basketball coaching staff

July 22, 2008

Tulsa, Oklahoma - University of Tulsa Head Basketball Coach Doug Wojcik announced today that assistant coaches Dave Wojcik and David Cason (Kay-sahn) have been promoted to Associate Head Coaches.

Wojcik and Cason joined the Tulsa coaching staff shortly after Doug Wojcik was named the school's head coach in March 2005. During their tenure, the Golden Hurricane has compiled a three-year record of 56-42, posted back-to-back 20-win seasons, played in the 2008 Conference USA Championship Game and won the 2008 College Basketball Invitational Championship.

"We couldn't be where we are today without the contributions and dedication of Dave Wojcik and David Cason. They are experienced coaches, recruiters, evaluators and teachers. They each possess a positive attitude and great work ethic. They've made a tremendous impact on our program and have allowed us to make great strides in three years," said Wojcik. "They each have a great court presence and the respect of our players. Their ability to communicate with our current players, recruits and parents is unique and special."

Wojcik, 39, the younger brother of Head Coach Doug Wojcik, came to Tulsa following one season as an assistant coach at the University of Dayton. Before that, he coached at Navy under Don DeVoe for one year. He spent three years in the prep ranks at his alma mater, Wheeling Central Catholic High School, where he was the athletic director and in his final two years the head basketball coach as well. He led his teams to back-to-back state championships in 2002 and 2003.

Before that, Wojcik spent three years (1997-2000) as an assistant coach at Loyola (Md.). He also coached three years at Xavier (1994-97), one year at Loyola (1993-94) and one year at West Liberty State College (1992-93). At Xavier, the Muskateers advanced to two NCAA Tournaments under Skip Prosser. In his first stint at Loyola, Wojcik helped that school win the MAAC title and advance to the school's first and only NCAA Tournament.

Wojcik began his coaching career in 1991-92 under Lefty Driesell at James Madison. In his only year there, JMU posted a 21-11 record, won the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title and played in the NIT.

Cason, 35, came to Tulsa from TCU where he spent two seasons (2003-05) on the coaching staff. Cason helped the Horned Frogs reach the NIT and finish with an overall 21-14 record in the 2004-05 season.

Before that, Cason spent the summer of 2003 serving as an assistant coach at Manhattan College. He also spent three years at North Carolina as the Director of Basketball Operations (2001-03), and before that was at Notre Dame as the Director of Basketball Operations for one year. Cason was on the staff with Doug Wojcik at both Notre Dame and North Carolina.

At UNC, the Tar Heels posted a 53-43 record over that time, and reached the NCAA second round in 2001 while finishing with a 26-7 record. UNC advanced to the NIT in 2003 and finished the year with a 19-16 overall mark. In one season at Notre Dame, the Fighting Irish posted a 22-15 record and earned a berth in the NIT Championship game.

Cason also coached at Eastern Illinois for three seasons and began his coaching career as a student assistant coach at his alma mater, Illinois State, under Kevin Stallings.
