Tulsa Basketball Team Prepares for Canadian Exhibition Trip
Aug. 24, 2008
Tulsa, Oklahoma - Tulsa's returning basketball players began preparations on Friday for this coming weekends' three-game exhibition trip to Vancouver, Canada. The Hurricane continued practice sessions over the weekend. Newcomers will be able to participate in drills on Monday as classes begin at The University of Tulsa.
Had Coach Doug Wojcik is excited about spending extra time with his team. The Hurricane will practice Monday through Friday before leaving for Vancouver on Friday. Tulsa will play two games on Saturday and one contest on Sunday.
"This trip gives us the opportunity to get to coach, to be with your team, to have unity of the team, to go on a road trip, and yet it's a time of the season where there's not a lot of pressure," said Wojcik. "The opportunity to coach the guys on the floor with a basketball in August is a real leg up we have as far as putting things in, and it allows the newcomers to get an understanding of what we're trying to do,"
On Saturday, August 30, Tulsa plays the University of British Columbia in a 1:00 pm (Pacific Time) contest at War Memorial Gymnasium in Vancouver, then turn around for a 7:00 pm (PT) contest that night against Trinity Western University.
UBC posted a 27-9 record last year and advanced to the Final Eight of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Division, losing to eventual champion Brock University Badgers in the first round. UBC hosted the University of Oklahoma in a similar exhibition contest last year, losing to the Sooners, 81-62.
Trinity Western finished in fifth-place in the Canada West Pacific Conference last year.
A day later, Tulsa will play the University College of the Fraser Valley at the Envision Athletics Center at 1:00 pm (PT). UCFV posted a 14-13 mark last year, and also played four American universities in exhibition competition, including Marquette, Boise State, Idaho and Air Force.
