Tulsa Outscores UAB, 49-42

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alex Singleton scored his third touchdown of the day with 5:16 left in the game, and Tulsa held on to defeat Conference USA foe UAB, 49-42, in front of a crowd of 13,196 Saturday afternoon at Legion Field.
Linebacker DeAundre Brown picked off Austin Brown's pass at the UAB 31 yard line and Singleton erased them all in five rushes, crashing into the end zone from six yards out for the winning score for the Golden Hurricane (4-1, 2-0 C-USA).
The high-scoring game was marked by big offensive plays, and timely defensive stops and turnovers. Tulsa forced three turnovers, including an interception that led to the game-winning score, and a fumble recovery on a blitz that sealed the win. UAB forced two turnovers from TU, including one that resulted in a touchdown.
Tulsa's defense tallied 14 tackles for 86 lost yards, including seven sacks for 68 yards lost. UAB (0-4, 0-1 C-USA) gained 99 yards on the ground, but netted just one rushing yard for the game.
Singleton totaled 58 yards on the ground on 12 carries for his fourth career three-touchdown game, and second this season. Trey Watts ran 10 times for 93 yards and a score. Cody Green completed 23-of-39 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns to Willie Carter and Keyarris Garrett. Carter caught seven passes for 71 yards, while Garrett caught six passes for 52 yards.
UAB, which had been scoring just 16.7 points on the season, exploded for 42 points against the Hurricane. Running back Darrin Reaves ran for three touchdowns on 61 net yards. Brown completed 20-of-37 passes for 337 yards and three touchdowns, two of which went to Jamarcus Nelson.
Tulsa had two turnovers, a missed field goal and a punt blocked that ended in seven points for the Blazers. One of the turnovers, an interception, came when Tulsa was driving late in the first half at the UAB three-yard line, while the fumble was at the UAB 47-yard line and saw the Blazers take the ball 51 yards for a score.
Trailing by 14 points at halftime, the Blazers held the Hurricane to three plays on the first second half possession and then went 74 yards in five plays to make the score 35-28 as Darrin Reeves scored his second touchdown of the game with a two-yard run at the 12:40 mark of the third period.
Demarco Nelson took the subsequent kickoff 64 yards to the UAB 35-yard line, but the Hurricane offense managed just six yards and failed on a fourth-and-four play at the 29-yard line. The Tulsa defense stepped up and held the Blazers to zero yards on five plays. The Hurricane offense took the ball at their 29-yard line and went 71 yards on six plays as Trey Watts ran the final 10 yards for a Tulsa touchdown and a 42-28 lead.
At the end of three quarters, Tulsa gained only 103 yards of total offense, and the Blazers put up only 74 yards, but the two teams were even on the scoreboard for the quarter, scoring seven points apiece.
The Hurricane went into the fourth quarter with a 14-point lead, 42-28, and at the UAB 47-yard line trying to get more separation from the pesky home team when Green fumbled the center exchange and gave the ball to the Blazers.
UAB made the most of the turnover, taking the took ball 51 yards in seven plays as Darrin Reeves scored his third rushing touchdown of the game, cutting Tulsa's lead to seven points at 42-35. The UAB defense held the Hurricane offense to -2 yards on the subsequent possession and went 50 yards in three plays to tie the score at 42-42, as Brown threw a short pass to Jamarcus Nelson who took it 50 yards down the right sideline for the UAB score.
Tulsa's offense was stagnant on its possession, while UAB's next possession resulted in a DeAundre Brown interception that gave Tulsa the ball at the UAB 31-yard line. The Hurricane offense marched those 31 yards riding on the back of Alex Singleton.
Brown sacked UAB quarterback Austin Brown on 3rd-and-8, but the Blazers converted fourth down with a 17-yard completion. Three plays later, however, Mitchell Osborne gave Tulsa the ball back in one fell swoop. He sacked Brown, forced a fumble and fell on the ball, allowing the Hurricane offense to kneel out the clock.
In the first 4:07 of the game, the UAB Blazers had already taken a 14-7 lead, but by the end of the quarter Tulsa took over the lead 21-14. The first period saw the two teams combine for 324 yards and 35 points.
UAB took the opening kickoff and on the first play from scrimmage scored with a 75-yard pass from Austin Brown to Jamarcus Nelson, as the Tulsa defender, John Flanders, fell on the play opening up the lane down the middle of the field for Nelson.
After 3-and-out for Tulsa, UAB's Brown mishandled a snap and Tulsa's Daeshon Bufford fell on the ball at the UAB 16-yard line. On the second play, Alex Singleton rushed in from three yards out for his sixth rushing TD of the season.
The Blazers scored again on the subsequent possession, going 75 yards in five plays on a five-yard pass from Brown to Patrick Hearn.
Tulsa responded again after the UAB score with a 57-yard drive in 10 plays to knot the score at 14-14.
The second quarter began with a block of Cole Way's punt giving the Blazers the ball at the four-yard line. It took UAB just three plays to go in for its third touchdown of the game, tying the score at 21-21 at the 13:24 mark of the second quarter.
Tulsa took the subsequent kickoff 75 yards in eight plays as Green connected on his second TD pass of the game with an 11-yard strike to Keyarris Garrett as the Hurricane jumped out in front 28-21 with 10:48 left in the second quarter.
The Hurricane held UAB to -4 yards on three plays on the Blazers subsequent possession. The Tulsa offense took possession at their own 30-yard line and went the final 70 yards in four plays as green raced 45 yards to extend Tulsa's lead to 14 points, 35-21.
At halftime, Tulsa held better than a 200-yard edge in total offense, 347 to 142, while holding just a 14-point lead against the Blazers. Tulsa gained 194 yards through the air and 153 yards on the ground, while the Blazers had 141 passing yards and one yard rushing in the first 30 minutes.
Tulsa will be back on the road next Saturday in Conference USA action against another East Division opponent, the Marshall Thundering Herd, in Huntington, West Virginia. The game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network beginning at 2:30 pm.
