TULSA HEAD COACH Bill Blankenship
On running the running the ball with success
"We felt like we needed to keep our defense off the field some and to do that we needed to run the football. That's what we do anyway, but they were really loading people up and putting extra hats in there and gave us a lot of blitzing. They made it tough, but we were able to find enough yards."
On being able to build a 21-3 lead and hold on
"We were in a great situation, but we give up a big kickoff return and a short pass that turns into a long touchdown. Just like that it's anybody's game. We have to do a better job closing it out. But tip your hat off to the Miners, because they never quit and kept fighting to the bitter end. Their quarterback does a great job. He's really elusive, hard to get down and takes care of the football pretty well."
On how crucial this win is for his team
"It's big for us. We needed a conference win. We have no non-conference games left so we have to crawl out of that hole one game at a time. We go into a bye week that will really help us. Hopefully we can get a little healed up and get ready for Tulane. It is very important to get that first one."
On not playing from behind
"It's something that's easy to say. We took the ball to start the game which is a little different from what we normally do, but we just felt like the offense could maybe jump start us. It turned out to be good. We get some big long plays early and get in and get some points, so I think that helped us. Our defense was playing good, but that kickoff return was a eye opener because it let them get back in the game."
On coming out Offensively with composure and the offense clicked early and that seemed to help the entire team's confidence
"I think that was the best execution we've had overall. We really played well early. We got into some bad field position late in the half and didn't get to dig out of it. I thought we had enough balance in what we were trying to do to keep them off balance."
SENIOR QUARTERBACK Cody Green
On the game
"There was a sense of urgency through everybody. As an offense, we needed to put together a game for four quarters. We needed to help out our defense. We (the offense) needed to flex our muscles and show that we are the veteran group on the football team."
On the offense clicking tonight
"Versus Rice in the second half, we started clicking. We just carried it over into this game. The balls were flying good. The O-line was doing their job like last year's O-line."
On TU winning the toss and electing to receive, then scoring a touchdown on its first possession for the first time this season
"That really sparked us. When the coach says, `Offense, you get the ball,' that puts a chip on our shoulders."
On completing 14-of-17 passes in the game
"It feels good. It actually shows the work that I've been putting in. I wish it had happened earlier in the year. But we're in conference play now."
On offensive line coach Denver Johnson's postgame locker room celebration
"When that big guy gets rolling, that's what this team is all about. Hopefully, we got a taste of that and we can keep it rolling.
On playing at Tulane in two weeks
"We'll go down to New Orleans and be ready to play."
JUNIOR RECEIVER Thomas Roberson
On the game
"I'd like to thank God for giving me the opportunity to come back from the injuries that I've had. It's been a rough couple of years and a rough last couple of months, so I'm just very thankful to be out here."
On his touchdown catch
"Every chance you get, you want to make a play. You don't get very many opportunities. Honestly, I didn't think I would get to play again (after missing the first three games because of concussion symptoms)."
On freshman receiver Keevan Lucas
"You really can't say enough about him. I thought he might have a big game today. I figured I might get double coverage when we just have two (wide receivers on the field), so I knew he was going to be open quite a bit. His touchdown catch was pretty spectacular. He just gives us another threat - another way to extend the defense. It was big for him to step up the way he did."
