CHICAGO, Ill. - University of Tulsa junior safety Dexter McCoil has been nominated for the Defensive Performance of the Year, Intersport announced today. The Defensive Performance of the Year is part of a four-month competition that lets fans determine which individual performances reign supreme during the 2011 college football season.

The winners will be revealed during the two-hour All-Star Football Challenge special airing at 7:00 p.m. (ET), Feb. 3 on ESPN2. In addition to recognizing the season's top performances, the All-Star Football Challenge will feature college football's biggest stars in a live skills challenge.

From now until the end of Bowl season, the two top defensive players of the week will be featured on the All-Star Football Challenge Facebook page (www.facebook.com/AllStarFootball), along with two top individual performers among quarterbacks, receivers and running backs. The top weekly vote-getter will proceed to the finals, which run Jan. 16-22.

McCoil did all he could to squeeze out a victory for Tulsa against BYU in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl, recording 10 tackles, one pass break-up and intercepting two passes for 37 return yards, but it wasn't enough as BYU scored in the final seconds to pull out the 24-21 victory. His two interceptions gave him 13 for his career, thus tying the all-time school record. McCoil ended the season with 84 tackles, seven pass break-ups and six interceptions for 131 return yards.

The other week sixteen nominee for Defensive Performance of the Year is North Carolina State's David Amerson. Amerson had five tackles and two interceptions in the Wolfpack's 31-24 win over Louisville in the Belk Bowl.

At the other positions, week sixteen nominees include Utah's Jon Hays and Illinois' Nathan Scheelhaase at quarterback, Purdue's Akeem Shavers and Mississippi State's Vick Ballard at running back, and Florida State's Rashad Greene and Toledo's Bernard Reedy at receiver. To learn more about any of these incredible performances and to vote for any of the nominated players, visit www.Facebook.com/AllStarFootball. Fans can vote as often as they would like in each category and can share their vote with Facebook friends. Week sixteen voting opened today and ends on Friday, January 6, at 9:59 a.m. (ET).
