Mobile, Alabama -
The Tulsa football team practiced on the fieldturf at Ladd-Peebles Stadium today in frigid temperatures, as it dipped to low 30s for the practice session. The Hurricane went two hours and 20 minutes, from 2:40 to 5 pm, before returning to the headquarters hotel for the team dinner.
Tulsa and Bowling Green were treated to a night of Bowling at the AMF Florida Lanes on Wednesday night.
TRAINS, TRAINS AND MORE TRAINS . . . The Mobile River borders the Tulsa team hotel to the east, but just before the river are railroad tracks . . . and boy, those tracks seem keep busy -- even at 1:30 am . . . and yes, even 4 am.
Paul Smith MEETS WITH WUERFFEL COMMITTEE . . . 2007 Wuerffel Award Winner Paul Smith and his wife Krista, as well as Coach Graham and a few athletic staff members had an opportunity to meet with members of the Wuerffel Committee today in Mobile . . . the headquarters for the Wuerffel Committee is located in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., about two hours east of Mobile . . . the word is that a group of eight or more committee members will drive over for the game in a Winnebago and be tailgating before the game . . . the Wuerffel Trophy presentation will be Feb. 15, 2008 in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
BOWLING RESULTS . . . Although no official results were kept, it appeared that Bowling Green would have won a match-up of bowling teams . . . BGSU junior cornerback Antonio Smith had a high game of 208 . . . Tulsa's best performances came from Kyle Grooms with a 178 and John Warren with a 177 . . . the best five-member team score of 652 in the second game was turned in by the team of Chris Chamberlain, Kyle Grooms, David Johnson, Paul Smith and Alexander Bridge . . . at a quick glance, BGSU had a number of teams surpass the 600 team total, while Tulsa had three games over 600.
A VISITOR TO PRACTICE . . . University of Alabama senior defensive end Wallace Gilberry, from nearby Bay Minette, Alabama, was a visitor at Tulsa's practice today . . . he was a guest of co-defensive coordinator Paul Randolph . . . Gilberry, who had 80 tackles and 27 stops for -99 yards this year for the Crimson Tide, will play in the Senior Bowl in Mobile in three weeks . . . the three Mobile television stations filming a portion of Tulsa's practice received an unexpected interview when Gilberry showed up at practice . . . Gilberry was coached by Randolph when he was the defensive line coach at Alabama.
MEDIA MAKING WAY TO MOBILE . . .
The Tulsa media will be making their way to Mobile on Thursday after covering Oklahoma's game in the Fiesta Bowl on Wednesday night . . . all four Tulsa TV stations will be represented at the GMAC Bowl . . . three writers -- Eric Bailey, Mike Brown and John Klein -- will be covering the game for the Tulsa World.
