TULSA'S DEXTER McCOIL NAMED A FINALIST FOR DEFENSIVE PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR

Finals voting takes place from Jan. 16-22

Jan. 10, 2012

Chicago, Ill. - University of Tulsa junior safety Deter McCoil was named a finalist for the Defensive Performance of the Year as four college football standouts have advanced to the finals of the All-Star Performances of the Year, Intersport announced.

Joining McCoil in the finals are Utah's John Hays for the FRS Quarterback Performance of the Year, Purdue's Rakeem Shavers for the Running Back Performance of the Year and Toledo's Bernard Reedy for the Receiver Performance of the Year.

All-Star Performances of the Year is a four-month competition that lets fans determine which individual performances reign supreme during the 2011 college football season. Each top weekly vote-getter proceeds to the Finals, which run Jan. 16-22. The winners will be revealed during the All-Star Football Challenge special airing at 6:00 pm (CT)/7:00 pm (ET), February 3 on ESPN2.

McCoil, Hays, Shavers, and Reedy will compete against 16 other finalists, as the final weekly qualifiers will be announced following the completion of the collegiate bowl season on Monday.

McCoil was the week sixteen finalist after out-distancing North Carolina State's David Amerson in the online voting. McCoil did all he could to squeeze out a victory for Tulsa against BYU in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl, recording 10 tackles, one pass break-up and intercepting two passes for 37 return yards, but it wasn't enough as BYU scored in the final seconds to pull out the 24-21 victory.

McCoil's two interceptions gives him 13 pick-offs for his career, thus tying the all-time school record. McCoil ended the season with 84 tackles, seven pass break-ups and six interceptions for 131 return yards.
