Tulsa's Smith to Quarterback in Hula Bowl

Hurricane record-setting quarterback will play for the East squad

Jan. 11, 2008

Honolulu, Hawaii - University of Tulsa senior quarterback Paul Smith is one of three quarterbacks for the East squad in Saturday's Hula Bowl. Game time is 5:00 pm (CT) at Aloha Stadium. The game can be seen in Tulsa on Cox Digital Cable on Versus Network Channel 252.

Smith will be joined by New Hampshire's Ricky Santos and Marshall's Bernard Morris as the East squad quarterbacks.

Smith led his Golden Hurricane team to the school's sixth 10-win season this year and a victory at last Sunday's GMAC Bowl, garnering a 63-7 decision over Bowling Green. Smith was named the GMAC Bowl's MVP after passing for 312 yards and five touchdowns.

The senior from Owasso, Oklahoma, had an NCAA single-season record 14 straight 300+ passing games this season. Smith completed 327-of-544 passes for 5,065 yards and 47 touchdowns, both Tulsa and Conference USA records. He became just the seventh player in NCAA history to throw for over 5,000 yards in a single season.

The East squad is coached by Boston College's Jeff Jagodzinski and Illinois' Ron Zook.

In existence since 1946, the Hula Bowl is a showcase of the top college football all-stars from the current season and it gives athletes the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities in front of NFL talent scouts. Previous athletes playing in the Hula Bowl have included: Heisman Trophy winners Johnny Rogers, Jim Plunkett, Tony Dorsett, Billy Sims, Mike Garrett, Steve Owens, Rashaan Salaam, Danny Wuerffel, Ricky Williams, Ron Dayne and Eric Crouch.

Smith is the eighth Tulsa player to play in the Hula Bowl.
