Tulsa's 2001 Football Schedule Features Four Bowl Teams
Feb. 18, 2001
Four bowl teams including defending national champion Oklahoma highlight The University of Tulsa's 2001 football schedule, as announced today by Tulsa Head Coach Keith Burns.
The four 2000 bowl participants -- Oklahoma, Fresno State, UTEP and Boise State -- dot the Hurricane schedule within the first six weeks of the season. Tulsa will play six home games, beginning with a Thursday night contest against Indiana State.
The Hurricane will kick-off the Labor Day Weekend on Thursday, August 30 against Indiana State, a former Missouri Valley Conference opponent of Tulsa. The last time the two schools met was in the 1984 season as the Hurricane clinched the Missouri Valley Conference title against the Sycamores with a 24-17 victory in Terre Haute.
After an open week, Tulsa squares off against defending national champion Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma on Saturday, Sept. 15. The Sooners completed the 2000 season with an undefeated 13-0 record and claimed the national title with a victory over Florida State in the Orange Bowl. The last time the two teams met, the Hurricane captured a 31-24 upset victory in the 1996 season.
The Hurricane returns home a week later to begin play in the Western Athletic Conference as Fresno State visits Tulsa on Sept. 22. The Bulldogs, who finished the 2000 season with a 7-5 record and 6-2 league mark, participated in last year's inaugural Silicon Valley Football Classic. Tulsa will be looking to avenge a 34-12 setback against the Bulldogs from a year ago.
The Hurricane will take to the road to face WAC co-Champion UTEP on Sept. 29. The Miners compiled an 8-4 overall mark and 7-1 conference record last season enroute to playing Boise State in the Crucial.com Humanitarian Bowl. Tulsa leads the series 5-4, as the Hurricane has won all four games in El Paso, while the Miners hold a 4-1 edge against the Hurricane in Tulsa, including a 40-7 victory during the 2000 campaign.
Tulsa seeks revenge against non-conference foe New Mexico State to begin the month of October. The Hurricane and Aggies square off at Skelly Stadium on Homecoming (Oct. 6). Last year, NMSU garnered a 42-28 victory in Las Cruces. The Hurricane takes to the road a week later to face new WAC member Boise State on Oct. 13. It will be the first meeting between the two schools. Boise State posted a 10-2 record last year and defeated UTEP in the Crucial.com Humanitarian Bowl.
The final five games of the season include teams in which the Hurricane posted a 4-1 record against during the 2000 campaign. Hawaii visits Tulsa on Oct. 20, followed by a road game at San Jose State (Oct. 27). Last year, Tulsa handed Hawaii a 24-14 setback, and captured a 28-17 win against the Spartans.
Tulsa will play three games in the month of November beginning with a home game against new WAC member Louisiana Tech (Nov. 3). The two teams played a non-league game last year in Tulsa with the Hurricane capturing a 22-10 victory. Tulsa travels to Houston on Nov. 10 to face Rice, before returning home for the season finale against SMU on Nov. 17.
