Tulsa, Okla. -

The Tulsa football team opened spring drills on Tuesday with a two-hour workout on the turf of H.A. Chapman Stadium, and Head Coach Bill Blankenship was pleased with the execution and retention for the first spring practice.

"It was a little better execution than I expected. It was probably less physical than what I was hoping to get. I thought retention was great from coming out of bowl season," said Blankenship.

"We started off with our hitting drills, trying to set the tone. If you're going to be great running the football and being great playing defense you have to be able to block and tackle, and that drill helps set the tone," added Blankenship.

"As far as our execution and retention I thought we were maybe a step further along than last year, and part of that was keeping our coaching staff intact," said Blankenship.

Tulsa will be back on the practice field Thursday afternoon.
